It’s now just six weeks until Grand Theft Auto VI launches and inevitably leaves its mark on the video game industry for generations. Rockstar Games’ gangster, American satire open world finally launches on November 19, 2026 for XBOX Series X|S and PlayStation 5 – with a PC version all but confirmed to follow.
Over the last 24 hours, there had been some speculative reporting that Microsoft had secured streaming exclusivity for GTA VI, and that being in the XBOX ecosystem, it would enable PC players to stream the game too.
Immediately out to respond to the speculation was XBOX’s Chief Strategy Officer, Matthew Ball who said on X (formerly Twitter): “While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
Neither the exclusivity debunk, or lack of PC streaming support should come as a surprise to anyone. Whilst Rockstar Games have said they’re “trying new things” with GTA VI including its trailblazing showcase on streaming giant Netflix – which secured 31 million views in the opening week – they have repeatedly stated this is a console-first title. Developers of some of the most polished video games ever released, it would been an incredible move for them to allow their game to be played on PC via streaming, typically offering lower-quality graphics and performance. Meanwhile, the marketing of GTA VI has been more aligned to PlayStation than XBOX, with Sony claiming the game ‘plays best’ on PS5, with two GTA VI DualSense controllers also coming.
Under the leadership of Asha Sharma, XBOX have tightened the screws on the XBOX game streaming offering, with Game Pass players seeing a reduction in the amount hours per month included in their subscription. Meanwhile, they’re trying new methods to use streaming to broaden the daily active users, including a version of the service that includes ads. With the imminent arrival of GTA VI, the reduction in hours offered to players may be a move to ease server load and / or drive revenue from players desperate to continue their Leonida adventure when away from their consoles.
What will ease the pressure on PlayStation and XBOX servers is the ability to pre-instal Grand Theft Auto VI which begins on November 12, 2026. This is the same date that pre-orders of the ‘physical’ code in a box version of the game will begin to arrive on gamers doormats.
