Netflix Reveals 31 Million Views of GTA VI Extended Look in Opening Week

Rockstar Games decision to launch Grand Theft Auto VI’s first deep dive on streaming giant, Netflix appears to have been a blinder of a move. Netflix have now revealed that the 27-minute feature of Jason and Lucia’s highly anticipated Vice City adventure secured “topped the English film list with 31.1M views and hit No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally.” The GTA VI footage beat out new Netflix original film release, The Whisper Man by 8m views.

The extended look was a Netflix exclusive for merely 6 hours before arriving on YouTube where the trailer there has attracted 17m further views. To make the Netflix numbers sound even more impressive, it should be noted that as of August 24 this year, YouTube counts a view as someone who watched a single frame of the video. Whereas Netflix takes a more calculated approach whereby the number of hours viewed is divided by the total runtime of the film / episode.

The base PlayStation 5 footage of the game is truly astounding – here’s all the key information. Featuring details on the story, the world of Vice City and wider Leonida and a breadth of inspiration about Jason and Lucia themselves, the extended look has been met with a very positive reception online. People particularly seem to be fond of Lucia. Ahem.

The decision to try new things” with the extended look on Netflix raised many eyebrows when confirmed last month. Traditionally, game trailers are launched straight to open platform YouTube to ensure as broad of a reach as possible. However, GTA VI is on its own level of cultural importance and impact, with this move now appearing a real power play from Rockstar and parent company, Take-Two.

One has to wonder what other games will follow in the footsteps of GTA VI and seek to have their games featured on other streaming services including Netflix itself, alongside other industry leaders Disney+ and Amazon Prime.

With only two and a half months until Grand Theft Auto VI launches, Rockstar Games will be doing everything in their power – legally and technically – to avoid any further leaks. Breaking their silence on the leaks ahead of the extended look, the studio said they were “heartbreaking for our team”.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on XBOX Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are open now with pre-download beginning November 12. The ‘physical’ code in a box version will be dispatched to customers for November 12 to enable them to pre-instal also.
