It’s been quite the day for Grand Theft Auto VI already today. As pre-orders go live tomorrow for what many feel is the biggest game in the medium’s history, the price of the game has finally been revealed as well as an Ultimate Edition. The physical version of the game has also today been confirmed to be a code in a box.
Known to have the ‘marketing deal’ with Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto VI, Sony have published an article on their PlayStation Blog which claims that the game “plays best” on PlayStation 5 – and before you ask, there’s no mention of PlayStation 5 Pro in there.
The Blog post says that Sony and Rockstar have come together to make PlayStation the place to play the game “by leveraging its innovative features”. So, what features are they?
First, the PlayStation 5’s controller, the DualSense will react “to your actions and bringing the sights, sounds, and sensations of Jason and Lucia’s story into the palm of your hands”. Utilising the haptic feedback in the DualSense, responsive vibrations will pulse from your controller, whilst the adaptive triggers will give dynamic resistance to what Jason and Lucia are doing on-screen. The other controller feature is that responsive sounds will come out of the DualSense whilst you play.

Grand Theft Auto VI also utilises the console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, which will offer better audio immersion to Vice City and wider Leonida. The technology’s audio positioning will help to “bring this world to life around you in unmatched ways”.
Finally, utilising PlayStation 5’s powerful SSD hard drive, GTA VI will have “near-instant load times”, ensuring players will be rarely removed from the action. Lets hope the initial load time is short too, many will recall how long GTA V took to load in on XBOX 360 / PlayStation 3.
Bluntly, this is very little to be excited about. If you’re an XBOX Series X player and considering changing to PlayStation for the game, it doesn’t seem worth the investment. Technically I would expect parity between XBOX Series X and the PlayStation 5 base model, of course the Series S will underperform its peers in some way. Whether PlayStation 5 Pro support can make the platform change worthwhile, remains to be seen.
