The September release schedule continues to be one of the busiest we’ve seen perhaps ever and now we can add another to the list. Today developer Kyle Thompson alongside publisher Top Hot Studios has announced the release date for the upcoming metroidvania Well Dweller. Additionally they have announced Well Dweller will be a day 1 Xbox Game Pass title!
The announcement trailer above shows that Well Dweller will release September 22nd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Steam and the Nintendo Switch. As mentioned it is also a day one Xbox Game Pass title. It was originally announced at the Nintendo Indie World showcase back in August of 2025.
Also as part of today’s announcement is that Well Dweller will get a native Nintendo Switch 2 version. The Switch 2 version will feature higher-resolution graphics and enhanced texture quality.
Well Dweller is a dark, bizarre, and twisted mythical adventure from one of the worlds most well known Metroidvania developers. Kyle Thompson previous titles Crypt Custodian and Islets were very well received by critics and players alike. When Crypt Custodian released in 2024 we gave it an 8.5 in our review.
In Well Dweller players will take control of Glimmer, a tiny bird who is armed with a matchstick. Glimmer must traverse the lands burning everything in their path to save their family from the wicked queen. During this adventure adventure Glimmer will face many terrifying beasts while gaining new abilities to help on their adventure.
While September may be a jam packed month, I think Well Dweller will do well enough to stand out, especially as a creative, fun looking indie title.
