Everything You Need to Know from the GTA VI Netflix Extended Look

GTA VI Netflix Extended Look

Following a week of battling leaks, Rockstar Games have finally shared their full extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI via Netflix. In a 26-minute Vice City extravaganza, Rockstar have shared the first official footage of the game since Trailer 2 in May 2025 and it is a complete deep dive into the most anticipated video game launch of all time. Below we capture the key highlights from the extended look ahead of the full launch, which is now less than three months away.

If you’re not a Netflix subscriber, the extended look will be available via YouTube later today.

Jason and Lucia

Jason (Jay, to Lucia) and Lucia (Lu, to Jason) are very, very different to Michael, Franklin and Trevor from GTA V. The trio were certainly fun whilst they lasted but a change in approach was due for VI. I’ve always been excited for the Bonnie and Clyde-like couple of Jason and Lucia, and from what the extended look showed today, Rockstar have knocked it out of the park. The dynamic between the two of them flows so wonderfully, it feels like despite their unholy antics, Rockstar want us to fall in love with them. They live in a small, modest apartment with a tired old car to ride around in but they are making moves.

Lucia kicks ass. Around 9 minutes into the trailer we get to see her fist fighting three guys in an alley and beating the living daylights out of them. Able to wield a pump action shotgun with one hand, it is clear to see why she has spent some time behind bars. She is the cooler customer of the relationship, owing to her sassier, sweary-er words compared to Jason’s more sarcastic, duller tone (which isn’t a negative). Lucia’s looks and style almost push her into the femme fetale category, with an allure that is likely to win over players.

Jason is the more vanilla of the two, but I think his dryer personality will resonate well with players. Compared to the vocal, dramatic male trio from GTA V, Jason is a refreshing relaxed character. It’s a little tricky to work Jason out from the extended look but it’s very easy to identify his soft centre with a large space in his heart for our heroin, ‘Lu’. It appears that he will be the one who leads what opportunities he and Lucia pursue, being the thinker, and more calculated of the lovers.

What has been the cause of a lot of internet discussion is how you’ll split your time between playing as Lucia and Jason. That remains unclear. But, from the new footage we know that missions will not just be played as one character. Also, the new footage demonstrates that outside of missions, you will be able to change between Jason and Lucia in the same way that you rotated characters in GTA V, with the cut to birds eye view we seen back in 2013:

Changing between Jason and Lucia much like changing characters in GTA V

The World

Skydiving into Vice City

Veterans of GTA: Vice City will remember the Miami clone city being an 80s neon, palm tree mini metropolis. The modern Vice City and surrounding areas are worlds apart from the 2002 classic. This world is an incredibly detailed space that players will likely be discovering new things in for months. VI’s contemporary setting introduces towering swanky apartment blocks, glamorous cars and a material city that replicates modern Miami.

GTA V offered players tennis, golf and so much more outside of the core experience. There again is plenty to do back in Vice City. Basketball, scuba diving in seas full of marine life, going to the gym or paddling in canoes, it’s all here. And yes, those of you sinners who frequented Pole Position in Vice City, strip clubs return as we see Jason making it rain throwing the cash around in new lap dance bar, Jack of Hearts. Even Lucia seems to be enjoying herself in the joint, no questions here!

One of the big draws of GTA games is, of course, the vehicles, There will be car races, off ride dirt bike racing and other ways to brurn some rubber. The roads of this world all flowing with diverse, natural traffic that doesn’t have the robotic NPC GTA driving we’ve known for all 3D franchise entries.

Unsurprisingly, it seems that tech including smart phones will play a big part in GTA VI, even more so than they did in GTA V – mirroring the way they’ve encroached our lives even more since 2013. Everyone has a phone, with annoying personalities walking around on livestreams (just like Kick people) with live chats appearing on the right hand side of the players screen.

Phones will play a key part in GTA VI

Coming off the back of Grand Theft Auto V, which pushed GTA’s set pieces to being more Hollywood than older titles, it appears we’re in for more wild action moments in VI. At 14-minutes into the trailer we see Jason and Lucia pick up a guy who immediately orders them to push the pedal to the metal. With Lucia at the wheel, Jason is invited to the back seat with an M16-like assault rifle and immediately gets to work taking out a police helicopter with a 4-star wanted level. Jason can aim for the wheels of pursuing cop cars to make them flip out or crash into surroundings – I guess that’s a little nicer than cop killing, huh.

Story

The extended look begins with Jason and Lucia entering a rough apartment building looking for someone Boobie. Lacking any fear of any of the intimidating guys and girls on the inside, the pair head up to find a drug production apartment. The drug makers take a call from someone call Nesto who gives them a heads up that the cops are on the way leaving Jason and Lucia blasting their way out of the apartment.

Brian will be a key character in the game. Jason and Lucia meet Brian and with what appears to be his wife, Lori in a rooftop bar before recapping on their recent non-law abiding antics. A sizable amount of the new footage is narrated by Brian, which in truth doesn’t make too much sense at this point, but we can tell that he is something of a guide and confidant of Jason.

There will be interrogations too, that there’s a sneak peak of 10-minutes into the extended look, with Jason and Lucia handcuffed but still managing to get themselves out of trouble.

Nothing too detailed on the story was given away today, and I am grateful for that. But what is easy to identify is that there will plenty of NPCs to do a variety work of for around the city. Robberies, security work for a business called Megamundo or assisting with other illicit activity, it’s all here.

Performance and Fidelity

All of the footage from the show was captured on a PlayStation 5. It can be expected that the XBOX Series X performance will be on par with that of the PS5. XBOX Series S performance isn’t mentioned in the trailer.

The visuals of this world are simply, stunning. To offer this level of visual quality in such a detailed world will perhaps enable fans to understand why this game has been in development for 13 years. Puddles on the ground offer almost perfect reflections, whilst reflections from cars driving past glassed buildings happens in real time.

The Rockstar Touch

What cuts Rockstar’s games above the rest is their attention to detail. If you’ve played Red Dead Redemption 2 you’ll have witnessed the sensational level of detail in the game such as horses testicles shrinking in the cold – or in fact, they’re often so wonderfully subtle, you probably didn’t even notice. But that is the Rockstar way, phenomenal detail that propels the medium to another level. Each cutscene or conversation gives the player button prompts to do extra things. Tap a trigger to smoke during a conversation, or grab a beer from the fridge as you chat to Lucia.

Each NPC, item and footprint in the sand at the beach are there by design

Driving down the road you’ll encounter people jumping off bridges or fighting in the street. Walking to a convenience store for a quick refreshment – hey, remember even GTA: San Andreas had CJ managing his weight levels – you’ll see an entourage of unpleasant folk outside doing their own thing outside. It’s so removed from other open world games where the NPCs just lounge, or walk around in such a generic style. The detail is even afforded to sidewalk curbs which have unique sparys of graffiti.

Character Models and Animations

The character models in GTA VI have looked diverse and outstanding ever since the first two trailers. It’s safe to say that Rockstar have upped their game even further since as every NPC in the game is uniquely created. Hair, tattoos and clothes for each and every NPC in the game will blow you away, each entirely distinguishable from the next.

Grand Theft Auto has always been a parody of America, it’s way of life, it’s culture, it’s people. GTA VI captures such a diverse array of American subcultures, particularly in its people. Ethnic groups are leaned into, with other non-race cultures such also portrayed, including red necks, street racers and other modern societal groups.

It’s not just the character models either, it’s how they maneuver around the world, and what they’re doing in it. Elderly NPCs get around the world on mobility scooters, with younger folk flying around on e-scooters. No one is just stood around idling in this city, they’re all engaged in what’s happening with you, and others.

What’s Next

This 26-minute deep dive has given us so much more information about GTA VI, and the game looks genuinely incredible. Details on the story were light and I’m particularly interested to know how Jason and Lucia came to be together in the full release. There will surely be some bent police in the game too as that was teased in the early trailer apartment escape.

There were teases of the music we can expect in the game including Phil Collins but with GTA’s radios being so intrinsic to the experience, I’m eager to see a set list.

Performance of the game was solid on PlayStation 5 but owners of a PS5 Pro and XBOX Series consoles, particularly the Series S will have questions about the performance options ahead of launch.

With less than three months to go, some questions are answered but there are many more for Rockstar to answer. As the marketing campaign continues, I’m sure we will hear more in the very near future.

GTA VI Pre-Orders and Release Date

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on XBOX Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are open now with pre-download beginning November 12, including for customers who order the ‘physical’ code in a box version.
