The Steps: Cave Exploring With An Added Twist

Check out our video guide below, or read on for a text and image guide.

Behind the first Risen Grenadier enemy on Valley of Ashes, there is an Officer hiding in a military wagon suspended in the sky.

Talk to this man to accept the quest.

Follow the path, going down the broken bridge, to progress. You’ll grab the pistol on your way down. Once you’re at the bottom, you’ll spot a Lantern, along with some enemies before it.

In the area with the Lantern, you’ll have to clear the Nephtoglobin-blocked wooden elevator. Destroy both Nephtoglobin Weakspots to unblock it.

Head up the lift and go to the right; there are three Carrion enemies in it (the mass of human jelly crawling on the floor). Climb up a ladder on the other side of the cave to progress with the quest with a pickup.

Follow the path around, and you’ll be able to raise the lift to a higher level. Use that lift to head back down to where you started.

Now, go back up the lift, and where you would have gotten off the lift on the right, jump to the left to see a pathway blocked by a dry Nephtoglobin wall (a yellow wall with holes in it). Open the wall by using the fire transmutation. This leads you into a cave.

In the cave, there is a dangerous enemy. He is fast and has a lot of health. I suggest keeping him at a distance and using Fire Transmutation or learning the accelerated attack pattern. If you have any grenades, it is a good time to use them. After defeating him, there should be a note near a lamp at the end of the cave. Pick it up, then head up the ladder to the left of the note (don’t forget to open the chest in there)

Follow the path from the ladder back up until you return to the top where the officer was. Talk to the officer. Now you stand at a choice. Tell him the truth or lie about his troops.

No matter the choice, you will gain a good reward. However, after finishing the quest and resting at the Lantern, the quest will have a hidden ending based on your choice.
