Over the summer an unexpected new addition to the God of War saga was revealed during Sony’s State of Play showcase – a new mainline entry not starring Kratos, but his wife we only met briefly in God of War Rangarok, Faye. Since the announcement, we’ve received a steady steak of updates and details regarding the game including the release date of February 16, 2027. Today, Santa Monica Studio has announced a delay to this date though, as God of War Laufey is now planned to release three months later in May 2027.
God of War Laufey follows its titular protagonist (also known as Faye) as she attempts to escape a mysterious realm known as Everywhen following her death prior to the events of God of War (2018). The narrative runs concurrently to the 2018 entry and 2022’s Ragnarok, while introducing new mythologies to the universe in the form of Egyptian and Mongolian gods. Faye is portrayed by Daredevil actress Deborah Ann Woll features an entirely new playstyle compared to series protagonist Kratos.

While the game’s release date was revealed only a month after the game’s reveal during San Diego Comic Con, Santa Monica Studios has announced that the game needs more time for polish and will now launch on May 20, 2027. A message from the studio reads “We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”
The game’s release window was originally teased in response to Sony’s controversial decision to end PlayStation physical game production in January, 2028. The studio confirmed that the game will arrive on a disc, which will be unaffected by the delay.
God of War Laufey will release exclusively for PlayStation 5 on May 20, 2027.
