The response to PlayStation’s recent announcement that it is ending the production of physical games has not gone down well to say the least. Fans have taken to social media to make their voices heard very loudly regarding their frustration over the decision, specifically towards posts on PlayStation social media channels. Perhaps attempting to deter any negativity towards future announcements Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has revealed that God of War Laufey will release on a disc, which gives us a big hint towards when the game will launch.
God of War Laufey was announced with a 20-minute unbroken gameplay trailer during Sony’s State of Play last month. The game follows Kratos’ deceased wife Faye as she awakens in an unknown realm known as the Everywhen and occurs concurrently with the events of God of War (2018) and Ragnarok, while serving as the next main series entry.
Earlier this week, PlayStation announced multiple panels for this year’s San Diego Comic Con, including a panel focused on the new game featuring multiple lead developers and actors. Today the studio took to X (Twitter) to confirm more details regarding the panel, while also adding in a follow-up post “We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.”

Given that the game’s revealed implied no release window and that Sony’s cutoff for PlayStation disc production is January 2028, it’s not hard to infer that this is essentially confirming a 2027 release for Laufey. This also lends weight to the possibility that this San Diego Comic Con panel is exactly where further release information for the game will be revealed. The panel will take place on July 24, with panels for Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls also commencing over the weekend.
God of War Laufey is in development for PlayStation 5.
