In what feels like the most random Friday announcement ever Sony has just announced the release date for the much anticipated God of War Laufey. Originally rumored to be releasing sometime late this year to compete with Grand Theft Auto 6, Sony has now put that rumor to rest with an official announcement that the game will be releasing on February 16th, 2027.

Though some of us might have been hoping for another adventure with Kratos at the helm, Laufey instead tells the story of what happened to Faye while Kratos and Atreus were experiencing the events of Ragnarök. It’s a story that runs parallel to the events we’ve already experienced in the two modern entries and will no doubt tie together some of the mystery that has surrounded Kratos’ late wife since her demise in the beginning of the God of War (2018).

Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.

Cory Balrog, current Creative Director of Video Game Development at Santa Monica Studios, also confirmed today that there are plans in motion to have a God of War sequel where the big man himself returns and leads a title sent after the events of Laufey. For now, that’s all we have but here’s to hoping it’s a dive into another unconquered mythos.
