Nightdive Studios has been responsible for some of the best modern remasters, including its excellent revival of the System Shock series and re-releases for cult classics such as Blood, The Thing, Heretic, and Hexen. Earlier this year, the studio announced that it was remastering one of the most influential PC games of all time, Thief: The Dark Project, while also bringing the game to consoles for the very first time. Today, the studio announced that the game will arrive digitally next month.
Thief: The Dark Project was developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 1998. Players control a master thief named Garrett as he uncovers a sinister plot tied to the organization that raised him. The game is an early entry in the “immersive sim” genre, with advanced enemy AI and stealth systems that would go on to influence the likes of Hitman and Dishonored.

These days the rights for Thief belong to Swedish holdings company Embracer Group, which has invested heavily in remasters for back-catalogue titles such as the classic Tomb Raider and The Legacy of Kain games. While those were primarily handled by Aspyr, Nightdive is taking the reins this time with Thief: The Dark Project Remastered arriving on December 3, 2026, digitally. The physical PS5 and Switch 2 versions will arrive in March 2027 via Embracer’s Clear River Games division. The Nintendo Switch 2 version will be compatible with original Nintendo Switch consoles.
The remaster will transfer the game to Nightdive’s KEX engine, incorporating 4K resolution graphics at up to 120 frames per second. It will also include all content from the 1999 Thief: Gold release, and add achievement/trophy and modern controller support. There are multiple physical versions to choose from too, with the ‘Trapezoid Edition’ recreating the original 1998 big-box PC release.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will release on December 3rd for PC, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
