Legendary thief Garrett is stepping out from the shadows once again, as renown remaster studio Nightdive has revealed Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, an enhanced re-release of the iconic Looking Glass Studios game set to release later this year.
Thief: The Dark Project is a stealth game released by Looking Glass Studio and publisher Eidos Interactive in 1998 for PC. The game is set in a fantasy city simply known as ‘The City’, and follows a mysterious protagonist called Gareth as he works his way through the criminal underworld and unravels a dark plot brewing within of the city. The game was critically acclaimed upon release and has gone on to inspire titles such as Dishonored and the Styx series.
During the PC Gaming Show, Nightdive Studios announced that it is developing a remaster of Thief: The Dark Project. This new version will include 4K visuals with higher frame-rates, quality of life features, and modern control options. The remaster will also mark the game’s console debut.
Nightdive Studios is no stranger to high quality remasters of beloved titles. The studio has previously remastered other Looking Glass titles such as System Shock 2, even producing a full remake of the first title. It has also remastered classics such as Doom, Heretic, Hexen, and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.

The announcement of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered comes just a few weeks after IP holder Embracer Group iterated its intention to license classic franchises to partner developers – among the IP mentioned was Thief.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S this Winter.
