While I was sadly stuck in the office today for important meetings, others of us got to check out the ID@Xbox Showcase. Lucky for me, we have a full coverage piece of everything that was shown earlier today. There was one trailer in the mix, though, that caught my eye. It was a release date trailer for an upcoming exploration game called Rustown.
Rustown is a stealth exploration project from solo developer Plotrick (Three Kingdoms: Alias) that was initially teased a few months back. This initial teaser only provided some glimpses of gameplay, but not much in terms of story. But in this new trailer, we’re also provided with some context of what is going on in the world of Rustown.
We open to a young individual on a train. They have a received a letter from their father. Their father…who they thought was dead. The only information we have to locate him: the return address – Rustown. Which apparently is a slum for the infected. Infected…with what, dare I ask?

Rustown focuses on the journey of our protagonist to see their father who they have not heard from in over three years. He apparently contracted the “idiot virus” during the pandemic (how quaint). This disease, unfortunately, left our lead’s father with impaired memory and severely diminished intelligence.
Rustown, a haven for the infected, has become a lawless land where the infected have congregated since being cast out by their families. Our protagonist must navigate this formidable landscape to find their father and find out why he disappeared. From what we can gather in the trailer, Rustown will feature top-down stealth exploration gameplay, with the occasional puzzle or two tossed in there.
The latter portion of the trailer pitches Rustown as a “…tender dystopia for those weary of hate.” But when is it coming out?
June 30th, 2027 to both PC and Xbox Series X|S. This writer is intrigued, only for the exploration of a society that has fallen apart from the rest.
