Thanks to today’s Nintendo Direct, we now know the Danganronpa 2×2 release date. There had been a delay announced at Anime Expo back in July, but now we know we won’t have to wait too long into the new year to enjoy this return to the ultimate killing game. Danganronpa 2×2 will now release January 14, 2027. They weren’t kidding when they said early 2027!
Return to paradise across five unique islands when you revisit Danganronpa 2×2. Or revisit the killing game with Monokuma and Monomi in this thrilling visual novel murder mystery game. The game will come with the original storyline as well as the new Slayhem Mode. I have to admit, this is what I am most excited for. Especially after the trailer.
In the trailer we get to hear the characters use the term “slayhem” more than I had anticipated for sure. We hear the question of whether characters have their slayhem item and that the slayhem level is 100%. At this time, we know that Slayhem is the new storyline that players will get to explore when diving into Danganronpa 2×2. The same characters, the same setting, but a new killing game appears.
There’s also a quick mention of weird cards that each character has received from Monokuma but very little information as to what these mean. So while Jabberwock island has seemingly remained mostly the same, everything that takes place on it may change. What are these weird cards? What is the slayhem level? Is this just a capacity to kill or does it have something deeper? So much to learn and explore in a familiar and beautiful setting.
We also get a look at a new character in Danganronpa 2×2. There are lots of thoughts and rumors as to who this new character may be. For the sake of those who perhaps have not yet taken the leap into the Danganronpa fandom, I won’t speculate on who this character may be as others may have but I have my thoughts.
Personally, I find it quite exciting that we’ll be revisiting the scene with a whole new story mode. While I most likely would have jumped right in to a remake even if there wasn’t a new story mode, it’s exciting to see a fresh take on the series. I will admit, the Danganronpa 2×2 release date was one of the things I was hoping most for at the Nintendo Direct and I am so glad they did not disappoint.
If you haven’t played the games just yet and want a quick (truly too quick) introduction to the series before playing Danganronpa 2×2 there is an anime. But the best experience is to play the first one before diving into 2×2. Now knowing that it releases in January, the clock is ticking! Get in there before Monokuma comes after you. My favorite little murderous bear has a gun so you could be in trouble!
