During the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, fans were treated to the reveal of Danganronpa 2×2. We learned there would be new thrills, chills, kills coming in this re-imagined scenario. During an anniversary event in Japan, gameplay was revealed for the first time getting fans quite excited to see their favorites in action once again. In February we also got our first look at the collector’s edition for those who would be looking to bring home a piece of Jabberwock Island.

Then not too long after, it started to feel like the information came to a crawl. Where was the release date announcement? When would we get a demo? That brings us to today, at Anime Expo, where Spike Chunsoft had a panel that focused largely Danganronpa 2×2 as indicated by it’s lineup. Unfortunately, not everything was good news.

New Game Details

During Anime Expo we learned the new story featured in Danganronpa 2×2 would be the “Slayhem” mode. This is what we had been promised, a new scenario based on Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair but with a different storyline. Would your favorite character survive? Who would be the killer? Would romance be in the air? During the panel, it was revealed that both the original story with updated graphics and the new Slayhem mode would be available at the start of the game. This is great for those who perhaps have already dug out their old copies to replay the original games. We also learned that Slayhem would offer about 20% more content than the original story fans have explored.

The world map is also quite different than players may be used to. The side scrolling map has been replaced with a 3D World Map. Fast travel is also available in this new map. You can also view the map from the first person perspective as seen in the images below.

The Bad News

Of course, not all news is good news. It was also shared that while they had been looking for a 2026 release, the game has been delayed to 2027. The Spike Chunsoft team also took their site to share a prepared statement from Producer Shohei Sakakibara:

While development has been progressing toward a 2026 release, we have decided to move the launch to early 2027. We will share a more specific release date at a later time. We are continuing to work to bring you the best possible experience. We sincerely appreciate your patience as development continues, and we look forward to sharing further updates with you soon.

It’s not the news that fans may have been hoping to hear, but with such a beloved series, the additional time can only help. Danganronpa 2×2 will release early 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
