Japanese giant Capcom have already had a stellar year, with high-profile releases including the exceptional Resident Evil: Requiem and new IP, Pragmata. It now seems they are having one of the best years in their history as their Onimusha revival title, Way of the Sword has reached one million copies sold on its launch day.
The franchise which has been dormant for 20 years clearly has a place in people’s hearts as the initial sales performance has delighted Capcom. Announcing the news via a press release, which said: “Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the latest title in the series, have surpassed 1 million units on the first day of its release. Driven by the performance of this title, cumulative sales of the Onimusha series have now surpassed 10 million units.”

In the statement Capcom attribute the sales figures to multiple demo releases, hands-on opportunities at various gaming exhibitions, and broadening awareness of the franchise to a broader range of users – almost certainly a newer generation of players, too young to have played the original trilogy.
Unsurprisingly, Capcom also used the press release to reaffirm their intentions to revitalise more of their dormant IP. The series in line for revival include Mega Man and Okami. Based on the initial success of Way of the Sword, it may not be long until we hear of another new Onimusha title either. Most importantly, will we get another Viewtiful Joe?!
Onimusha: Way of the Sword released on September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
