‘Game of Thrones: War for Westeros’ World Premiere Trailer Shown at Gamescom

As an RTS fan there has always been one IP consistently missing from the genre – Game of Thrones. Sure we have mods for games like Crusader Kings II that allow you to live out your fantasies in a community made version of Westeros, but if we’re talking about official content the whispers in the air have been relatively quiet. That is of course until Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was announced back in June of 2025 at the Summer Games Fest.

Since then, it has been mostly radio silent. We have gotten a few short clips, and just enough to keep us interested but nothing has truly shown us what kind of RTS we can truly expect from Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. Yet just like The Long Night, it seems we finally have a summer to look forward to in this endless winter cold. Check out the trailer down below.

At first glance, the game looks and presents itself as a few other RTS’ that I have played throughout the past few decades. The first that comes to mind is the Battle for Middle Earth series (Remaster when?) and the hugely popular Age of Empire series that still brings in hundreds of thousands of players decades later. There is even a hint of some of the features of the Halo Wars series such as the ability to have hero units present on the field of battle that can use special abilities.

Multiple hero units can be used to apply static buffs to your armies.

We have everything from Jaime Lannister and the Lannister army, to Rob Stark and Jon Snow leading what I can only imagine is the Northern forces. The unit variety and types the trailer gives us a chance to look at range from basic archers and foot soldiers to mammoths and giants. This shows that only will we be battling against each other with normal armies but with specialized units as well. The end of the trailer even hints at us being able to control the Night King’s army, something fans have waited a long time to experience.

Whether the Night King is a playable character or the main antagonist of the story is still yet to be seen.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is slated to release in early 2027 and I can’t wait to get more information about what the game has in store for us.
