Use the Hell is Us: Solve Vitalis’ House Portrait Puzzle guide to keep progressing through the world of Hadea.

Hell is Us is third-person action-adventure game that aims to “return to the roots of adventure games” by getting players to rely on their instincts rather than way points and map markers. It’s ambitious and quite rewarding to make progress and discover stuff off the beaten path.

There’s a whole host of puzzles, mysteries and strange items to be found in the world of Hadea, where Hell is Us is set. Not to mention weird looking enemies too!

With that in mind, we’ve pulled together some guides which we hope are helpful. Please note that these won’t necessarily be step-by-step walkthroughs, but things to look out for to help solve the mystery.

Hell is Us: Solve Vitalis’ House Portrait Puzzle Guide

In the second area of the game, Acasa Marshes, you’ll come across the town of Jova. It’s pretty hard to miss and there’s lots to do there.

One of the many buildings is a locked up house that you cannot access. All the doors are locked, but you can see teasing glowy yellow orbs through the windows, so you know you got to get in there.

To get in, you need the key to the house. Where’s the key? Well it’s in the Acasa Marshes. You need to rescue Victor and Lieutenant Zao Ru from the tunnel crash. You can find this to the back left of Acasa Marshes area, if you're heading out from the town of Jova.

If you cross the bridge towards the Timeloop, bear left until you see the tunnel. Before you rescue them, the tunnel will be on fire where some trucks have crashed. Both characters will be hiding in the maintenance room to the right of the fire.

Whilst talking to Victor when you reach the maintenance room he will give you Vitalis’ Key. Head back to Jova and seek out the house. It’s got a blue tyre swing in the garden. It’s just past where the Priest is being tortured.

Now you’re in the house, you need to search to find three paintings.

Family Picture (1 / 3)

On entering, go in the first door on the left to enter a child’s bedroom. The painting can be seen on top of a chest of drawers (yellow orb). It should be of a child in a green car.

Family Painting (2 / 3)

Leave the last room and keep left to go to the next room. It’s the next door on the left. In the back room on a desk is the collectible.

Family Painting (3 / 3)

Head downstairs, and you’ll spot a chest on the right before a set of ladders. The last painting is in there. To unlock the chest, you need to use the Heirloom Necklace.

Once you’ve claimed this painting, head down the ladder.

Unlocking the Door

When you head into the next room, you’ll see three spaces on a wall. Guess what goes there?

Put all the paintings in the right space, use the shape of the frames to get them correct. Check the image below to see if you’re right.

So what’s the point of that? Well the order and the numbers on the paintings will tell you the code for the keypad to the door in the same room.

The code is: 3 2 1 7 1 3

I honestly don’t know where the number is in painting three, I guess that might be the child’s age and there maybe a note with the number in it somewhere. I just guessed from 00 to 13 and it worked!
