Gears of War Goes Multiplatform with Gears of War: Reloaded

And the Xbox releases just keep coming. With a great start to the year with Avowed, South of Midnight and Forza Horizon 5 on PS5, Microsoft has had a bumper start to the year. Now, Gears of War: Reloaded has just been announced.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a remastered and “natively optimised” version of the Gears of War. Featuring 4K resolution, 120FPS support, as well as cross-play and cross-progression, Gears of War: Reloaded will be delighting console and PC players when it launches 26 August 2025.

It will release on PC, Xbox Series consoles and, for the first time in the Gears of War franchise, on PlayStation 5. It will also be available day one on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate.

Developed by Gears veterans, The Coalition, in partnership with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief, Gears of War: Reloaded includes all the content from 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition that brought the Xbox 360 original to the Xbox One. It includes all post-launch downloadable content, including the additional Campaign act and all multiplayer maps and modes. All characters and cosmetics are available unlock through progression too.

Gears of War: Reloaded will support two-player co-op, with up to 8 players in versus multiplayer. Both of which are compatible with cross-play on all platforms.

Interestingly, Microsoft pointed out that no Microsoft Account is required to play Gears of War: Reloaded. However, they did note that having an MS account unlocks full cross-platform features. It will enable you to carry your MP and campaign progress between platforms, as well as send invites and play with friends across platforms. I’m sure some folk will be pleased to hear this, given the response to PC players needing to a PlayStation account for some of Sony’s PC ports.

For Xbox fans, Gears of War: Reloaded will be a free upgrade for anyone who already owns Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before today’s announcement. If you have, you will receive a direct message on your Xbox account with the code for upgrade to Reloaded edition.

How are we feeling about this announcement? I’m super excited for more people to play the OG Gears. Maybe I can get the Seriously achievement now there’ll likely be people playing the multiplayer again! This will certainly put us on while we wait for Gears of War: E-Day. Will we see Gears 2 and Gears 3 remastered in the same way? That’d be pretty ace.
