This week I had the pleasure of reviewing Sunny Café, the newest Visual Novel / Dating Sim from publisher Eastasiasoft and developer GameNobility. The game released on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC on March 27, 2024.

Sunny Café is a super cute visual novel where you try to find your barista protagonist, Bowen Wu, a companion. This game really gave me some Coffee Talk vibes, however the coffee making is much more simplistic and has less of an impact on the story. If you pay attention and follow the story you can sink a good 4 hours into the game. Will Bown Wu find the love of his live or will he be eternally alone?

Generally when I play Visual Novel games, I’m definitely playing them for the Gamerscore. I skip a lot of the dialogue and follow a guide. You can definitely do that in Sunny Café. It has all the option to fast forward dialogue and what not. If you do decide to skip most things that game should take you less than an hour. One of the charms of Sunny Café is that there are hidden coffee collectibles throughout the scenes that you will most definitely miss if you skip too quick. These collectibles provide you with some fun coffee trivia.

Along with all the romance, Bowen Wu, does have a day job. He wants to make one mean cup of coffee. As your friends and love interests come into the shop you’re presented with some fun minigames centered around, you guessed it, making coffee. I definitely enjoyed this part of the game. There’s minigames for selecting the perfect coffee for your customer, measuring the right amount of coffee beans, adjusting the coarseness and perfecting your brewing method. The game is quite forgiving. You receive a rating after each cup is made. I frequently received an A+ or A rating and actually had to go out of my way to earn an achievement for a D rating.

The games all present themselves in a different fashion: sliding scales, memory games, deciphering numbers and a pour within the lines game. If you make a mistake, no problem, you get as many redos as you’d like.
I actually thoroughly enjoyed this game for what it was. If you’re a fan of visual novels and some easy Gamerscore then this game should be right up your alley. Would definitely recommend!
