Joe Winter, the solo developer of the side-scrolling action game Song of Iron, has revealed his next project, the moody open-world action-adventure game Nyra and the Garden of Moros, currently in development for PC with no release date at the time of reporting.
Check out the gameplay reveal trailer for Nyra and the Garden of Moros, which premiered during The Mix Fall Showcase, below.
“Long ago, the god of doom known as Moros was imprisoned by the power of twelve magical seals. Each seal was entrusted to a gigantic Keeper, created to protect it for all time.
But the prison has been broken.
Now a dark corruption is spreading across the land, reaching the Keepers and turning them against Nyra. To stop Moros from returning, Nyra must cross the remains of a forgotten empire, discover the hidden domains of the Keepers, and climb their enormous forms to recover the seals.
These are not simply enemies to be defeated. Each Keeper is part of the world, its forgotten history, and what happens to them is ultimately Nyra’s choice.”
The second game to be developed and self-published via Winter’s studio, Resting Relic, Nyra and the Garden of Moros casts you as the titular Nyra, accompanied by your wolf companion Rama, as you explore the Old Empire, a place of desolate plains, dense forests, crumbling halls, and the enormous remnants of a forgotten civilization, in search of the 12 Seals.

Each Seal is entrusted to a towering Keeper, now afflicted by the spreading corruption, and it is up to you to decide how to deal with each one; will you destroy these ancient beings to reach your goals, or cleanse them at a cost? Whichever choice you make as Nyra, the consequences will be reflected in the world around you.
Explore this mysterious and atmospheric world on foot to discover secrets and hidden paths, as well as meet other beings that still live among the ruins, and cross the vast expanses in search of the next Keeper on the back of Rama.

While the comparisons to genDESIGN’s Shadow of the Colossus are clear as day, with you climbing onto giant creatures found across a vast world, Rama was actually the starting point for Nyra and the Garden of Moros. Rama was inspired by Winter’s late husky, Strider, whose loss helped inspire the project, while Nyra was based on his wife. It’s a deeply personal project that draws on Winter’s own life as well as his favourite games, from their sense of scale to themes of companionship and adventure.

Nyra and the Garden of Moros is in development for PC.
