Four years after its announcement, Kingdom Hearts IV has received its second trailer as a surprise appearance at today’s Nintendo Direct. While a date or release window was not announced, it was revealed that the game will now launch on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2.
Kingdom Hearts IV was originally revealed during a 20th anniversary event for the series in April 2022. A teaser showed series protagonist Sora waking up in a realistic Tokyo-inspired world known as Quadratum, inspired by the fictional in-universe video game Verum Rex. It was later revealed that an upcoming mobile game titled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link would set up the events of the fourth mainline entry, but this title was ultimately canceled.
This new trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV showcases more of that Quadratum setting and reveals new combat abilities for Sora. It also showcases returning characters Donald and Goofy, and new characters, including one that strongly resembles Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis Lucis Caelum. The trailer showcases the game running on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware and confirms that the game will release for Switch 2 alongside other confirmed platforms, but gives no indication as to when.
Square Enix also announced during the Nintendo Direct that the rest of the Kingdom Hearts series will be arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 in October.
Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development for PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
