It’s been a while since Jay and Silent Bob have been on a new adventure, but this time, you’re joining the crew. Welcome to the View Askewniverse.
Aiming to be released in Spring 2027, Jay and Silent Bob’s Joint Venture brings these characters into the farming sim genre. Yes, think Stardew Valley, but what if there was marijuana?
When you’re looking to combine characters such as Jay and Silent Bob that have dedicated fan bases and a beloved genre like the farming sim genre, there is a lot to get right. Nitrate Games believes they are up to the task of doing so. At New York Comic Con, we were able to hear from those working at Nitrate Games about what is important to them when tackling this. For Nitrate Games Co-founder Daniel Stellan Kendrick, it’s really about getting the tone and comedy right for the characters:
“I lovingly call this a stoner story valley, right? So this is a foul mouth, take on cozy games. In those games you’re growing turnips, radishes, in this game, you’re growing weed. And you’re growing all sorts of weed, and they’ll have all these different crazy effects. And it goes into some really cool surreal places that’s really in line with, you know, the clerks animated series and all of the View Askewniverse films, especially like Jay and Silent Bob Strike back that really kind of like wacky, fun, Kevin Smith voice. And this is a brand new story in the View Askewniverse. So there’s a main mission you can play that I will tell a plot within this world, but also you can get to know your neighbors. We’re unveiling all the characters that you can interact with and become friends with. And hetero life mates with in some cases, you can you can marry the characters as well. I think there’s a well for the die hard fans, there’s definitely a View Askewniverse tone… we feel like we have to get that great foul mouthed Kevin Smith voice. The cultural awareness of a culture is really important so the pop culture references. And then, you know, some surface level Easter eggs also some real deep cuts to the true die hard fans that have some pretty pretty awesome little Easter eggs. For some people who have seen all of these films.”
Nitrate Games is also very aware that the farming sim genre is a packed genre as is. When you’re looking at just one crop as well, there needs to be a different twist. In Jay and Silent Bob’s Joint Venture, that twist will take from some real life inspiration. Players will be cross breeding strains of marijuana. Game designer Idan Saban shared they knew this would be a challenge but one they were excited to tackle:
We landed on this strange breeding system where you get to, you know, breed a bunch of different strange, crazy effects, together that have tons of relevance to the story and the characters solve a bunch of different problems around town, and we really think players are going to be excited to engage for that. I mean with anything in game design, the ideation, you know, it takes a long time and we had 3, 4, 5 different versions of strain breeding before we landed on, you know, where we are today, and we really think that sort of ideation brought us along, and we left us in a really nice spot.
The team also shared that currently there’s no DLC planned for the game. Nitrate Games hopes to start play testing the game later this year eyeing November and December as their goal. While they all knew an IP like this could be difficult, the reception from fans has been wonderful in their discord and they hope to continue that pattern continues.
Nick Madonna, Co-founder of Nitrate Games, also made sure to share that the game will respect your time. The main story of Jay and Silent Bob’s Joint Venture will be roughly 10 hours and there isn’t truly a fail mechanic. While you may not get the results you expect in strain breeding, you won’t be penalized for it either. The idea is to have an enjoyable and stress free time with this title. Perhaps that’s also because the process of making the game hasn’t been too bad either with Chase Marotz, the Creative Director sharing that, “Kevin Smith is one of the best licensing partners I’ve ever had.” When the process comes together well, perhaps that will make the final product that much more enjoyable for the players.
