Not that I needed an excuse to head back into the Moscow Metro before Metro 2039 releases next year but 4A Games just gave me one anyway. The imprint announced today that a free next-gen update for both Redux titles: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux is coming later this month.
Rolling out first to PC and then PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, the upgrade brings higher resolutions and frame rates alongside a boatload of fixes.
The PC (Steam, Epic, Windows) upgrade arrives October 22nd, while consoles receive their shiny new updates on October 29th.
Probably the best part of this news, the upgrades will be free to owners of the original titles. This also includes a free upgrade to the current-gen console versions if you own them on PS4 or Xbox One.
Not a Remake Or Remaster, But A Much-Needed Glow-Up
4A Games’ language around this upgrade path is clear that this is not a remake or a full remaster of the titles. The original Redux look and feel stays the same. Instead, the developers have made more targeted improvements to take advantage of current-gen hardware.

Notable improvements that can be expected on release include:
- 4K texture support
- Improved animation fidelity
- Higher-fidelity audio
- Richer environmental detail
- Bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, including those requested by the community
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players will be able to pick between native 4k60 or an upscaled 4k render at up to 120fps on compatible displays. Lighting, shadows and particle effects also get noticeable upgrades. Each platform also gets their own specific upgrades including:
- PSSR support on PS5 Pro
- TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X
- Spatial Audio, Xbox Handheld, and Xbox Play Anywhere support
- DualSense Adaptive Triggers, Xbox Impulse Triggers
- Power Optimized Mode on Xbox, Power Saver Mode on PlayStation
Not going to lie, I’m looking forward to re-experiencing these titles with haptic feedback.
PC Upgrades Coming First
Steam, Windows, and Epic Games Store players get a first crack at these changes, which come a week before the console releases. DLSS, spatial audio, and 4K, uncapped framerates will be available in addition to the same bug fixes and quality-of-life changes console players receive.

Full patch notes for each platform will go live alongside launches, and I’m looking forward to combing through the updates.
50 Million Players Get Another Reason To Play
The update lands as the Metro franchise recently passed 50 million sales worldwide. Similar to when Metro Exodus received its own upgrades, the studio is calling the free update a way to thank the community.
“It has been an incredible journey over the last two decades, and we could not be more proud of what the team has achieved or more grateful to the players who have walked these tunnels with us,” said Jon Bloch, Executive Producer at 4A Games.
“Our community has supported us from the very beginning; every milestone we reach belongs to them as much as to us. Returning to where it all began with the Next-Gen Update of METRO Redux – and bringing it to fans free of charge as we did with METRO Exodus – felt like the right way to continue to say thank you.”

It’s also perfect timing for anyone who wants a refresher before the next title in the franchise, Metro 2039, launches on February 4th, 2027. Metro 2029 launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Whether you’re a longtime Metro fan like me, or bought the titles on sale and have them sitting in your backlog, there’s no better time to join the ride.
