Talk about some late night news. Moments ago Xbox and legendary game producer Hideo Kojima have announced an expansion of their partnership with Xbox now set to publish PHYSINT. This will now be the second Xbox published Kojima game with the upcoming horror game “OD” being the first.
To say this is unexpected news would be an understatement. PHYSINT was first announced back in 2024 by PlayStation during a State of Play. While in its early conception phase, there was a lot of excitement around the game. PHYSINT is expected to be something very similar to Metal Gear Solid, which of course Kojima is most famous for.
The game at the time was announced as a PlayStation studios game, much like the Death Stranding games were. Kojima has since gone on to buy the publishing rights to Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2.
PlayStation Cancels PHYSINT
The details tonight are coming in fast and furious to say the least but here is what we know based on social media posts and official blog postings. Hideo Kojima posted on his social media that earlier this year PlayStation made the decision to cancel PHYSINT. Determined to continue with the game Kojima began shopping the game to other publishers.
PlayStation first posted the news on their own social media platforms, confirming that they have ended the partnership with Kojima on PHYSINT. Their post says:
“An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future.”
Shortly after this post from PlayStation we got the post from Kojima stating:
“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”
Xbox Jumps In
As seen in Kojima’s post, the studio quickly found a new partner with Xbox. Announced alongside a blog post from Xbox, we got confirmation that not only is Xbox publishing PHYSINT but they are expanding their relationship beyond this.
The post itself doesn’t offer up too many details beyond announcing the partnership. Both Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and Hideo Kojima offered up comments on the partnership however.
“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX,” said Asha Sharma, XBOX CEO.
“This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world,” added Hideo Kojima, Game Creator and Founder of KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.

This new partnership is also said to expand beyond games, as Xbox is looking to leverage their own IPs in film and television. This suggests we may see a Kojima related film produced by Xbox.
Questions Remain
Now as this big shift comes into focus there are plenty of unanswered questions that remain. PHYSINT was originally announced as a PlayStation studios game and was likely only in development for PlayStation. Will Xbox cancel that version all together or allow it to still come out? Xbox has begun to shift back to exclusives, so anything is possible. How much time do they need to get the Xbox version built? When will PHYSINT release?
All of these answers will likely be a ways away. I suppose it’s possible we see more info at the Tokyo Game Show but we will have to wait and see. At the very least the timing of this announcement is curious.
Regardless, this is a big shift for a major release, and one that shows Xbox is willing to compete with PlayStation for content maybe more than ever.
