EuroVisual Removes Final Fantasy: Black Mages’ Legacy Listing, Project Status Unclear

French animation studio EuroVisual has removed Final Fantasy: Black Mages’ Legacy from its Upcoming Productions page, the animated series set after the events of Final Fantasy IX. The company has not publicly commented on the change, and the project’s current status is unclear.

The project was first announced in 2021 as part of a collaboration between Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios. Following Cyber Group Studios’ liquidation, EuroVisual took over production and added the series to its Upcoming Productions page.

The removal follows a series of quiet changes to the project’s public status over the past year. In May, Gamer Social Club reported that EuroVisual had changed the animated series’ listing from “In Production” to “In Development.” The studio also revised the planned first season from 13 episodes to 10, each with a runtime of 22 minutes.

The series is set after the events of Final Fantasy IX, and follows the lives and adventures of Vivi’s children, the last black mages. After one of the siblings is found frozen like a statue in the tavern they run, the rest set off to discover if this is their father’s legacy, catching up to them.

It is unclear exactly when the listing was removed, but the project no longer appears on EuroVisual’s Upcoming Productions page at the time of writing.

While the removal does not necessarily indicate the project has been cancelled, EuroVisual has not publicly explained the change or provided an update on the series’ development.

Gamer Social Club contacted EuroVisual President Grégoire Parcollet regarding the removal of the listing and sent a follow-up several days later. EuroVisual had not responded by the time of publication.
