Out of absolutely nowhere, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North received a shadow drop remaster in the form of the Legacy Edition. The well-regarded XBOX 360 / PlayStation 3 era Lord of the Rings title has been locked to old hardware for years, having not been made backwards compatible on newer consoles
The 60fps re-release has been met with a lot of appreciation from fans on social media, with many wondering what other games from the legendary book, cinema and more recently, TV serial franchise could see a new lease of life. Locked away on old hardware are titles including the beloved The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and more.
Well, there’s good news for fans. Developer Aspyr, who have a track record of releasing modern remasters including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain titles, have confirmed more LotR remasters are in the pipeline. The press release states: “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr. Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!”
Aspyr haven’t shared any insights as to what other titles may be in the works. There are some positively received titles in the catalogue including 2009’s Conquest which also come to XBOX 360, PS3 and PC. Another possible is The Third Age, which released in 2004 to XBOX, PS2 and GameCube, though mechanically that may feel dated in 2026.
Looking backwards rather than forwards may be the right move for now. The most recent Lord of the Rings universe title, Gollum, is generally regarded as one of the worst games of the generation. With a Metacritic score of 33 and User Score of 1.6, it’s a clear avoid, even for the most hardened LotR fans.
