There was an era in first person shooters where the biggest titles were all based in World War II. The greatest conflict that mankind has ever fought has provided the inspiration for many well known shooters, including the early Call of Duty (and some slightly more recent) titles, as well Battlefield and Medal of Honor.
That phase passed as gamers tastes moved more towards modern conflicts which allowed developers to be a little more creative with the stories, weapons and locations. If, like me, you mourn the times of excellent World War shooters, one game for your radar is The Defiant.
Familiar stories like D-Day, Pearl Harbour and other landmark WWII events have been trodden multiple times in the medium, though there are an almost infinite number of war tales that are ripe for video adaptation. Upcoming FPS from indie developer, Hangzhou Hoothanes Entertainment, The Defiant pits players as the Chinese forces during the Japanese occupation of China. The occupation was the longest conflict of the global war, lasting eight years and costing more than 14 million lives, with crimes against humanity committed.
To showcase more on the shooter, the developers have released a brand new gameplay trailer showing forest warfare, a deadly enemy and some QTE moments:
The Defiant is a single player title, with no competitive multiplayer. The developers are working on a co-operative experience, though that is in an experimental stage at the moment. With very impressive visuals, for Battlefield fans like myself, there is definitely some feeling of BF5 in here, both in visual design and gameplay.
In the ‘War of Resistance’ you’ll seek to repel the invaders across various Manchurian terrain using Chinese and global weaponry from the Hanyang Rifle to the MP18 SMG. From the latest trailer, it looks like there will be a lot more explosive weaponry to play with.
The Defiant will launch on XBOX Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Steam at a TBC date, players can wishlist now. If you’re looking for another WWII story to check out in the meantime, be sure to check out the great The Caribou Trail which is now available on PC and PlayStation 5.
