Point-and-click adventure games have been having a great 2026 so far, with standout titles such as Perfect Tides: Station to Station, Crushed in Time, and The Mermaid Mask among some of the highest-rated games of the year. Well, looks like the future is also looking bright for the genre as LucasArts veterans Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, and the rest of the Terrible Toybox team will be returning to Thimbleweed Park in 2028.

Thimbleweed Park was released for PC and Xbox One in 2017, with Nintendo Switch and mobile ports arriving later that same year. The game was a spiritual successor to Gilbert and Winnick’s classic adventure game Maniac Mansion, with pixel art graphics and gameplay inspired by the 1987 LucasArts title. The game was the result of a successful Kickstarter project, which raised $626,250 USD against a goal of $375,000.

Following the realization of his original Monkey Island conclusion with 2022’s Return to Monkey Island and the experimental rogue-like Death by Scrolling in 2025, Ron Gilbert and his team at Terrible Toybox will be returning to the point-and-click adventure genre with Thimbleweed Park 2. Don’t be fooled by the new number though; according to the Steam description, this entry is “Not really a sequel. Not really a prequel. It’s more Thimbleweed Park and just as weird.”

According to Ron Gilbert, Terrible Toybox will be self-publishing Thimbleweed Park 2 with funding from a private investor. He promises to continue providing updates on his Grumpy Gamer blog as development progresses.

Those familiar with the original game will know that its ending makes Thimbleweed Park a tricky game to follow up. This likely explains why the expectation is already being set not to expect this to be a direct continuation of the original game’s narrative. We’ll have to wait another while to see what Ron and his team are planning with their return to this mashup of The X-Files surrealism and 90s adventure game slapstick.
