Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker Review

Good morrow Gamer Social Club travelers! Have a drink and rest up because today we embark on our next adventure, a visual novel by developers Gentle Troll, Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker.

Step behind the bar, as you become the tavernkeep of The Drowsy Dragon. Located on the coast of Borkam, your bar becomes a respite to many a sea fairing traveler. Live vicariously through their stories and aide them in their travels with delicious potions. But to quote Gentle Troll, “fate is not written in the stars, it is written in the menu!” You have the special ability to alter the fate of your patrons with a well mixed drink. Will you give your adventurers sweet dreams or nightmares?

Gameplay

Players might recognize the game play and art style from Gentle Troll’s debut game, Tavern Talk. Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker is a standalone prequel that takes place in the same universe, just 36 years before.

Gameplay is very straightforward. In this visual novel, you play as the tavernkeep of The Drowsy Dragon. Located on a coast you see a menagerie of people. Everyone has a place at your tavern. Some looking for rest, others for someone to listen to their tale of adventures, most looking for one of your magic drinks.

As a tavernkeeper and a mage, you find joy in finding the right drink to serve your patrons. Each one is picked by you specifically for their needs and their journey ahead. Drinks determine the outcome of the story, so choose wisely!

In exchange for a drink, patrons will tell stories of their adventures outside the tavern walls. Some are easier to get to talk than others. String together rumors you hear to build quests to place on the board for patrons to take.

There is no tavern management in Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker. Allowing players to fully focus on the storytelling with casual drink mixing and quest building.

Drinks

In Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker, your gift of magical drinks can determine the fate of an adventurer’s quest. When requesting a drink, patrons will give you clues as to what they’re looking for. Recipes for each drink can be found in your book, but recipe might not mean what you think. Rather than a list of potions, recipes include the stats of the drink. It’s your job as tavernkeep to determine which potions fit the bill.

Drinks can be made by mixing 3-5 potions. Each potion can positively or negatively affect stats. Although the game is inspired by D&D, negative values don’t mean bad like they do in the TTRPG. Like positive strength is powerful and strong, while negative is gentle. (You can find this information in your book as well, each stat has a breakdown)

While building your drink, putting your mouse over a potion will tell you where a stat will move upon its addition. Potions can move single and multiple stats, as well as multiple levels. There are also different solutions to some drinks. As you add more potions and recipes, drinks can have multiple builds. You will have 15 potions and 15 recipes in total.

Once you’ve correctly made your drink, Beebug, your lovely assistant, will hold up a sign signifying its completion. Make a mistake before you’ve sent it to the customer? That’s ok. Pour your leftovers into the discard bucket on the left and Beebug will make it disappear. Once you serve the drink, it has already decided fate. If you’ve chosen the wrong drink, you can reload and try again. But sometimes it’s more fun to see where fate takes you.

Characters

There are 8 unique characters for you to meet in Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker. Each with their own background and personality. Get to know them by the stories they tell and the drinks they order. Form friendships and help them conquer quests by quenching their thirsts.

Mariyam, your first patron, you have known for decades. A wizard who is a tad closed off after the disappearance of her sister. At the start of the game you can choose to be friends or bitter enemies with her.

Una, a finfolk, has been living in your spare room in exchange for some repairs. She feels guilty leaving the tavernkeeper behind while she’s off adventuring, so she chooses to stay behind to keep them company. Will this lead to animosity?

Aegeus is a chef at a local restaurant who dreams of what’s beyond the call of the kitchen. Despite his lack of courage, he dreams of adventuring with heroines from his stories.

Rune… or is it Bliss? Mishka? Whatever their name is, is a true chaotic Fae who changes their name frequently. They stumble into your tavern while avoiding the guard, for maybe or maybe not stealing something.

While chasing the thief, Quasar the stoic paladin also finds himself inside your tavern. A devotee to Cassiopeia, Quasar takes his job very seriously.

Kya ,the pint sized, self centered princess brings a sparkle with her wherever she goes. She constantly wants to be the life of the party, but sometimes comes off as tone deaf.

Cain, despite living his second life, is an intense rogue who is still figuring out his new visions. His best friend Kya shares more about him that he himself opens up about.

Aquila, or Delphi as she likes to be called, is a retired famous adventurer. Burnt out from her past she turned to your tavern for solice.

Art & Music

The best way to describe the music in Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker is to call it, Fantasy Lo-fi. A soundtrack that didn’t distract from the story, but built up and changed along with the mood.

There was a lot of attention to detail in the art for this beautiful game. Each character’s personality not only shows in their conversation but in the subtle elements of their clothes and facial expressions. The animations of eyes, tails and other body parts makes them come alive. Rather than just looking at a page in a book, you’re given something that adds to the interaction.

Representation Matters

I really love the way that diversity and LGBTQ+ representation was presented in Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker. It wasn’t used as a hook or a catch, but rather authentic and beautifully woven into the story.

Developers Gentle Troll believe that games can change how people see the world. “With our games, we want to show how incredibly diverse people can be and that we can influence not only our lives but also the lives of the people around us – hopefully for the better.”

Points to Ponder

Although quoted 10-12 hours, this Tavern Talk Dreamwalker took me about 16 hours in my first playthrough. I didn’t rush, but also wasn’t slow in my choices or drink building. There is the ability to speed up text and skip text if you’ve already read the dialog.

Rather than fishing around in your saves, I wish there was a way to easily access finished chapters. To be able to easily go back and try for a different ending, especially for those who don’t have hours to devote to a second or third playthrough.

Notable Mentions

For streamers playing on PC and Mac, Twitch integration is available! Your community can vote on dialog responses and on which approach for a drink just by typing in chat. And petting Beebug isn’t just for the streamer, community members can too! Just type !pet beebug in chat.

There is a content warning to this game. There are mentions of death. grief and violence.

Conclusion

While Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker might not appeal to those looking for a more action packed game, this game excels in its ability to captivate fans of the visual novel genre. While it’s mechanics are really light, the game really shines in it’s emotional and charming story in the fantasy setting. Whether you’re a visual novel enthusiast, or someone looking to give narrative driven games a try, Tavern Talk Stories: Dreamwalker is the one for your radar.
