Gears of War: E-Day Direct: Everything We Learned

XBOX has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will release 6 October 2026 on PC and Xbox Series as a console exclusive.

After the XBOX Games Showcase, there was a Gears of War: E-Day Direct that delved into the game. We’ve pulled out as much of the details we can below.

A New World

The Coalition began with the Mad World trailer from Gears 3 and started from there. They knew that E-Day was a story the fans wanted them to tell.

E-Day comes with the advancement of technology. The Coalition claimed they couldn’t make this game before now. It was built in Unreal Engine 5 and as a result, everything had to be remade. Every asset and detail, characters, enemies, weapons, sounds, has been rebuilt from sratch. This allowed the team to take a break from the previous cadence of game, after game, after game.

The game will feature UE5’s ‘MegaLights’ – a groundbreaking lighting system. E-Day is going to be one of the first titles to ship with this new lighting system. This has helped them lean into the horror elements that Gears has always had. Speaking with Xbox Wire, Studio Art Director, Hanbeck, said

“Light and dark, getting into scarier spaces, dynamic shadows. This tech lets us do that in a way we couldn’t before.”

A Tale as Old as Time

E-Day is set before the original Gears of War. Peace has returned to Sera. Marcus and Dom are young veterans, grieving the loss of Carlos Santiago, Dom’s older brother. Without him, Marcus and Dom’s relationship is distant. E-Day takes place over three days, and is the origin story for Marcus and Dom’s brotherhood and the emergence of the Locust war.

Emergence Day (E-Day) is described as a global catastrope, the planet is cracking at the seams. But, The Coalition chose to only focus on the city of Kalona to ensure the human impact isn’t lost. The Coalition wanted to make the city feel alive, and the technology has allowed them to do this.

Classic Gears architecture, modern areas, military airfields and Imulsion refineries are all part of the city. It is the ultimate battlefield. Tight streets, open areas. There’s opportunities for corridors, verticality and, of course, plenty of covers to shoot from.

In E-Day, you’re watching a lived in city get ripped aparts. Customised destruction technology show an increased and devastating level destruction. The people are a core of the story. The city might be falling around you, but it’s the people’s journey that is the focus.

I Know That Guy

John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro are back as Marcus and Dom, respectively. They have returned from the Pendulum Wars, the emergence occurs during an armistice memorial.

The game is played from the perspective of Bravo Squad, we stick them throughout E-Day. The story has taken inspiration from the Gears of War novels, specifically Aspho Fields, for Dom’s family life and backstory on Carlos Santiago. Karen Traviss, the author of the Gears novels, was a consultant on E-Day.

Joining Marcus and Dom in Bravo Squad are Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. Mags is a former Gear who works at Kalona’s Imulsion Refinery. Lucas is a young cadet and communications officer who never saw the front lines, even though he wanted to. We also see the return of some fan favourite cahracters, including Tai Kaliso, from Gears 2. Gill Gettner from the Gears of War novels will also feature in E-Day.

Facial animation systems have been completely upgraded too, and are three times more powerful. Marcus’ eyebrows have more details in them than the whole character model in the OG Gears of War. This means more expressive characters and incredibly detailed and intense character models, and of course cutscenes and gameplay.

Combat Puzzle

Studio Creative Director, Matt Searcy has described Gears gameplay as a “combat puzzle”, a mix of enemy combinations, tactical weapon choices, and the player’s ability to read and move through the combat spaces. The Coalition says that E-Day has added to the vocabulary of how you can solve that puzzle.

Rebuilt character movement and cover systems include a bigger range of heights and shapes. You can slide from a sprint to get under objects, ride around corners. You can also jump! You’ll experience more cinematic gameplay too.

In terms of the gameplay, Searcy describes “almost action-move sequences – you throw yourself off a balcony, land next to your buddy and revive him, scramble through cover, slide under a truck, and hit safety on the other side.” E-Holes are back and apparently can appear from the ground, anywhere.

Locked and Loaded

The Locust have been made more scary! Boomer’s are bigger, drones are more aggressive and Wretches are louder. They’re more intense than they’ve been before. A new gore system creates a more meaty, and satisfying experience. There’s blood and bone damage, with localised damage, meaning plenty of gibbing.

Weapons have been revamped, alongside new ones too. The Gut Puncher grenade launcher is one of the new COG weapons, it fires armor-piercing explosive rounds with player controlled detonation. The Incinerator is a new Imulsion-fueled shotgun that melts enemies on contact.

The origin of the OG Lancer weapon (with the chainsaw) is part of E-Day. The score has been created to match a world on the brink of collapse. The sound of the Prototype Chainsaw Lancer, they tracked down the original model they used to record the sound in the OG Gears of War and built on it from there.

Squad Up

Multiplayer is back, not that it ever left, but E-Day will include it in spades!

Brand new multiplayer addition is Horde Siege. It’s a new 12-player PvE mode where three squads defend across large city maps.

E-Day will support four player co-op online and two-player split screen.

Versus multiplayer will feature classic 4 versus 4 Gears PvP in all-new maps set across locations from Kalona’s ravaged city. Seasonal road maps will introduce lots of new content which can earn almost all of it through in-game challenges, events and achievements.

The Coalition will discuss more multiplayer details soon, but have confirmed that there will be some Open Beta weekends, starting 6 August 2026. Early access will be reserved for preorders or Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass subscribers.

I am so excited for Gears of War: E-Day, it looks fantastic. 6 October 2026 cannot come soon enough!
