Phantom Blade Zero: What We Learned at the State of Play

The King of Hype: Phantom Blade Zero

It’s no secret that one of the most hyped games releasing this year on the PS5 is none other then Phantom Blade Zero. Originally announced back in May of 2023, the game looked to be the perfect mix of flashy samurai combat while giving us a fresh stance on the gameplay types we know and love. At today’s State of Play, we got another teaser trailer and some other information that is important before the game releases.

Teaser: An exciting duel and a crying baby?

The first new bit of information that was released was a special teaser trailer that showed off some of the games flashy combat and a few new enemy types we haven’t seen before. The trailer looks to be the games introduction cutscene and shows a masked figure fighting against two other assailants while holding a baby.

The baby is an interesting touch for sure, but it peaked my interest more then I’m willing to admit. The next twenty or so seconds of the trailer are a quick montage of some gameplay clips before it ends with a teaser for what’s to come.

A Clogged Release Window: The New Date

The second bit of news released today was announced shortly after the State of Play ended. Given how hectic the month of September is for gaming, I am not in the least bit surprised that they have decided to change their release date from September 9th of this year to October 29th. They state that they want to polish the game more, and honestly I love this for them as a developer.

Here is their official tweet if you feel like reading it.

Phantom Blade Zero is a fusion of classic Wuxia storytelling and exhilarating action powered by Unreal Engine 5. You play as Soul, a warrior with only sixty-six days left to live. Fend off assassins, unravel world-ending conspiracies, and defend your values with your life. Phantom Blade Zero is stated to release on October 29th 2026 on PS5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
