Agni first caught my eye during its feature at the Xbox Games Showcase late last year. A horror game inspired heavily by Indonesian horror movies featuring Indonesian director, Joko Anwar who makes a guest appearance as The Headman.
The game describes itself as “a cinematic survival horror, combining mind-bending terror and ritual strangeness, with Indonesian slasher style violence” and in the latest trailer from the latest Six One Indie Showcase, that’s for all to see.
The title has already drawn attention for featuring a female protagonist with a headscarf. It’s a positive and progressive move for a studio to choose a lead from such a demographic, but have no fear, Agni looks like she kicks serious ass. Agni is an investigator from a secretive agency, who disobeys order and is driven by regret. Village of Calamity is her rogue operative mission into the village, Desa Purba where she will face all kinds of weird happenings.
The game will feature classic horror genre traits including puzzle solving, limited resources and an array of messed up foes in her path. There are themes of psychological collapse, trauma and more. One thing for sure, is it will be a brutal game. In the latest trailer we see Agni stabbing enemies hands with sharp knives, heads pummelled on the floor and a tonne of blood. One scene even appears to show Alan Wake-like gameplay with a torch pushing enemies away – and that’s a very good thing.
Agni: Village of Calamity will launch later this year on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). The promising game from Indonesian studio, Sepurah Interactive has now been picked up by publisher, Wired Productions who brought us Karma: The Dark World and more.
