There is truly something so inviting about slice of life games. Rather than high stakes and chaos, players are meant to slow down and enjoy the small things that make life enjoyable. The allure is that the experience feels relatable and down to earth. That’s how it feels to play the visual novel game, Nook Fall: West Town.
Step into the role of a newcomer who arrives in West Town to manage their uncle’s small corner store during his absence. Revolving around an upcoming festival, uncover the town’s lore as you experience and explore your temporary home. Interact with charming (and not so charming) locals as you build relationships and make lasting memories.

Gameplay
In Nook Fall: West Town, your main goal is to take care of the customers who visit your store. Help them find the items they need by searching the shelves and assisting with their purchases. As you interact with the townspeople, build friendships, learn about the town, and become a trusted part of the community.
Beyond managing the store, players can take the metro around town to shop and explore. Stop in and grab a cup of coffee at Crowded Room, or relax with a record from Play on Time or maybe a book from Pulp. Lots to discover about daily life around West Town, and more to uncover of it’s past.
Although most of the story is told in conversation with locals, Newcomer (that’s what we’ll call our character) does write in their journal to share their thoughts and emotions at the end of each day. Throughout dialogue, Newcomer will have to occasionally select a response that will affect the story. A small pop up will appear and let you know that this choice matters. If you’re unhappy with how the story ends, you can replay the game and make different choices to experience new outcomes.

Pockets
From money, to your notebook and items, it’s all held in your pockets. Everything you pick up or purchase can be found there. You’re given a debit card and metro card from your uncle to help.
Money can be withdrawn from the ATM using the debit card every few days. Your uncle will deposit $200 oran (in game currency) for you to use at your discretion. He mentions saving some money to buy things for the store, but that situation never actually came up during my playthrough. I didn’t go crazy with my purchases, but I did buy a few records, books, and meals, and ended up with over $900 oran.

Your Notebook
The notebook can be found by clicking the book icon within your pockets. Inside you’ll find your schedule, journal and tips for playing.
Your schedule is divided into two sections: To Do and Done. The To Do section will list all remaining tasks, including the location and anyone involved. The Done section provides a summary of completed tasks and their outcomes, allowing you to review them later.
Your journal is a place to unwind and reflect at the end of each day. Newcomer recounts their experiences in thoughtful and eloquent detail. Players can choose the statement at the end of the entry. The more choices you make during the day, the more options of statements.
The tip section is extremely helpful in playing the game. Little tidbits of information from running your shop, how to use items in your pockets, to using the metro. Review this information when you’re stuck.

The Metro
The Metro is your form of transportation around West Town. There are 8 different stops along the route. To travel to another area, click on the bench at the metro station and up will pop the metro map. Mousing over each stop will tell you what you can find there. You can also check on the right side of the map where it says “map information” to see which locals are at this location. This is extremely helpful when doing tasks.

Art Style and Music
Nook Fall: West Town brings a nostalgic atmosphere with its use of a retro color palette and hand drawn aesthetic. This blend gives the visual novel game a classic and timeless feel. There is no animation; instead each scene unfolds like turning the page of an illustrated book.
Because Nook Fall: West Town takes place in the 80s, the use of vibey and very era specific music gives this game such a nostalgic feel. Layer that with ambient street noise and the low hum of the metro, and you get a deeply immersive, almost fully enveloping soundscape.

Conclusion
If you’re looking to slow down and experience a visual novel game that leaves a strong impression not by dramatic twists, but rather slice of life relatable nostalgia, Nook Fall: West Town is the one to play.
