Revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase last summer, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is the first spin-off in the tremendous Plague Tale universe. It’s been four years since the most recent entry, Requiem, which I still regard as one of the best, and best looking games of the generation. Now, it feels that the release is approaching as developer, Asobo Studio have begun their Devblog series, starting with information about protagonist Sophia.
Sophia featured in Requiem and played an excellent side-character role supporting Hugo and Amicia in their journey across a rat-ridden France. Now in Resonance, she is the star and we’ll learn more about her backstory traversing and plundering the Mediterranean.
Resonance takes place 15 years before the mainline Plague Tale games. Sophia is a “child of the sea, a fierce fighter, and a free spirit haunted by the secrets of her childhood”. The ‘Scorpion of the Seas’, she’s described as relentless and someone who doesn’t show any vulnerability. Resonance will detail Sophia’s journey now, but also her younger years alongside her father, Alec.
Asobo have shared how she will appear compared to her previous Plague Tale appearance, explaining how they wanted her to have untamed hair and “an almost “feral look”. In Resonance, Sophia looks more rugged with tattoos on show and belts across her chest. She too is a plunderer and the developers sought to depict her as such with bracelets, coins and other trinkets across her body:

Her design is rebuilt from the ground up, not just to have a fresh look for her leading role, but to reflect her age, her poor wealth and that she is “most importantly… sober”.
This is the first of three planned developer blogs from Asobo for the game as a TBC launch date approaches. There are two further planned blogs including an interview with her voice actress, Anna Demetriou. Before the final blog ‘Into the Myth’ will likely share more about the game’s story.
Moving towards release, Asobo have said that they are very much in the testing, balancing and refining stage of the game’s development. In short, we shouldn’t have too much longer to wait. Some of my favourite games of the last ten years, Resonance cannot arrive soon enough.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches this year on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Game Pass PlayStation 5 and PC.
