In some unfortunate news, French studio, Spiders, perhaps best known for GreedFall will be closing effective immediately.
After being in the industry for 18 years, Spiders has been known for a lot of ambitious games. Although the games often couldn’t reach their potential, there was a certain charm to Spiders games. Known for developing action RPGs, Spiders titles often felt like throwbacks to old Bioware games and they did manage to develop a couple of successful titles over the years.
Of Orcs and Men, for example, which was co-developed by Cyanide was the beginning of the Styx series of games, which lives on today. Games like Steelrising and GreedFall did also manage to find a fan base, with Greedfall managing to sell over 2 million copies. The company most recently released GreedFall: The Dying World, but it didn’t meet the success of the first game.
Spiders themselves confirmed the news on social media, announcing their immediate liquidation. The planned DLC for Greedfall: The Dying World will be released by publisher, Nacon.

It’s unfortunate to see Spiders close, as many gamers always felt the studio had a lot of untapped potential but not enough funding for their ambitious ideas. I personally enjoyed my time with games like Greedfall and the Technomancer.
Hopefully the developers at Spiders can come out of this okay. Perhaps some could go the route studios like Volition and Double Helix and restart under a new banner.
