One of the coolest indies in development, period, just got a much overdue surprise showing at the ID@Xbox Showcase. The showcase which overdelivered on its own set expectations revealed many new games and updates to others previously announced. With the majority of titles coming to Xbox Game Pass Day One, there was a lot to enjoy from the show.
Screenbound, the indie you may have seen before in which you play in both 2D and 3D simultaneously reappeared with a wonderful new gameplay trailer showcasing its unique and humbling gameplay.
In Screenbound, you play the game in both 2D and 3D at the same time. But the real quirk is that the 2D gameplay is being played on an OG Game Boy-looking yellow handheld (with the classic grey cartridges to boot) in the foreground. Meanwhile in the background the game is also being played in a 3D world reflecting what’s on the players handheld.
The new gameplay trailer shows some fantastical gameplay which sees the character move between playing in both dimensions. Each level is on a new cartridge which is popped out of the handheld back at the players desk, before a new on is entered for a new level – oh, and it even gets a dust blow on the way in. There’ll be some lucky enough to be young enough to not know what that even means.
The game has been in development for a long, long time and we last wrote about the game during summer 2024 showcases. Though no release window was given today, with new footage and confirmation that it’s coming Day One to Xbox Game Pass, it feels like we might finally be getting close to the release of Screenbound.
Screenbound is also coming to Steam and PlayStation 5.
