Trying to keep our hooves warm in the first major story expansion for Massive Monsters 2022 roguelike Cult of the Lamb – Woolhaven.
Winter is Coming, Again
The Woolhaven DLC is accessed through a new statue that has appeared in your cult stronghold. Interacting with this effigy throws you hoof first into an endless winter that, if left unchecked, will spell the end for your little gathering of forest creatures.
Winter is the major new mechanic introduced in Woolhaven. You are sent out by a forgotten God to find lost Lambs and return them to the flock.

The cold is not just a cosmetic thing; blizzards and lightning will constantly hammer your compound. Destroying your buildings, your crops will freeze, your cult members’ morale will drop, and your elderly will die. Having previously played Cult of the Lamb, I was fortunate to have some food stockpiled, as the ocean freezes, rendering fishing impossible, and crops freeze solid, preventing them from growing until winter passes. So, you have been warned.

The gameplay loop continues in the same fashion as Cult of the Lamb. You must head out on crusades. Kill a bunch of stuff, collect resources, and return to your cult to upgrade and take care of your members.
The Call of the Mountain
Woolhaven’s new winter setting takes you to a new area with new enemies to slaughter, new resources to gather, and dozens of new blueprints to acquire.

There is a new weapon archetype, the flail. Use these chained clubs to rain destruction down upon roughly 20 new bosses that must be toppled to make progress.

As you progress up the mountain, the storms at home will continue to worsen. Thankfully, there are new food sources that can be tamed, loved, and slaughtered for the cause.

Eventually, you will go inside the mountain where a whole new horror awaits, again full of unique enemies and cosmetic blueprints that can be crafted from all the new goodies you have been collecting.

Verdict
Woolhaven is everything you would want in a DLC. It only adds to what makes Cult of the Lamb special, with the visuals and characters all being as charming as ever. All the hard work you put into raising your cult is put at risk if you cannot calm the storm. A little piece of me died whenever a follower perished. You are forced to adapt to the new climate; it’s hard but not punishing.
I had zero performance issues during my 9ish hours it took me to get through the main story of Woolhaven and I felt like there was a lot more to uncover. It’s not a big departure gameplay wise from the base game, but the new enemies, bosses and the addition of the new base management mechanics made it absolutely worth jumping back into the already great fun Cult of the Lamb.
