PlayStation has long had an issue with low quality titles that only serve one purpose, a quick Platinum trophy. A myriad of titles that were used for this purpose have just been wiped from the storefront entirely. In total, 1194 titles from a single developer “ThiGames” were purged.
ThiGames output has been known for a long time, and has become synonymous with the “Jumping” titles. The jumping titles, such as “The Jumping Fries”, “The Jumping Peach” and “The Jumping Onion Ring”… I think you can see where this is going. Due to this, Sony have finally cracked down on these re-pallets of games designed solely to sell Trophies to hunters.

The deletion of the ThiGames catalogue has been received with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the move, stating that removing these “games” is fantastic. They see that they are just selling dopamine fixes for people who like to collect trophies. Furthermore removing low quality content from the Store sets a great precedent and keeps the marketplace tidy from blatant cash grabs. Others that like trophies and achievements in games to have some level of integrity also support the removals.
Others however, state that it should be up to the consumer what they chose to spend their money on. People also state that if these games are now permanently removed too, people that have all these titles on their cards will now be uncatchable when it comes to leaderboard positions. Especially if now that the games are unplayable for new players.
Personally, I’m in the former camp. I have been an achievement hunter on Xbox for a long time now, and the dip of quality in titles over the last few years alone that are primarily there to sell Gamerscore first have actually made exploring the storefront a tedious pain. I also hate that these developers are preying on what can be for some, an addiction. Personally, I hope going forward that storefronts exercise a little bit of quality control, and that other studios that have been tempted to mimic ThiGames will be put off.
But what do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts about this over at TheGamerSocialClub Discord.
