Suda51’s Romeo is a Dead Man Debuts Story Trailer

Grasshopper Manufacture’s Romeo is a Dead Man is quickly approaching release. After a reveal at Sony’s State of Play last June, the release date was announced almost out of nowhere last month during a Grasshopper Direct hosted by studio head Goichi “Suda51” Suda. Today, just over one month from launch, the studio has debuted a short trailer setting up the game’s story.

Romeo is a Dead Man follows Romeo Stargazer, an FBI Space-Time Police special agent, as he hunts down intergalactic criminals while trying to find his missing girlfriend, Juliet. The game is described as an “ultra-violent science fiction action game” that seemingly takes elements from Grasshopper’s past work such as No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw to blend over-the-top action with strong visual direction.

The latest trailer, narrated by Romeo’s grand-father “Professor Benjamin”, provides further narrative details and seemingly reveals that the story will include comic-book panel cutscenes similar to Lollipop Chainsaw. While there isn’t much gameplay to be seen here, it is the most attention that the story has received yet, but it’s hard to tell whether storytelling is a main emphasis in this title compared to past Grasshopper Manufacture titles such as Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes and The Silver Case.

Romeo is a Dead Man will be Grasshopper Manufacture’s first self-published title following its acquisition by NetEase Games in 2021. Following controversies from previous Grasshopper-adjacent titles like Hotel Barcelona and Let it Die: Inferno (neither of which were directly developed by the studio), Suda also confirmed that there will be no generative-AI content in the game whatsoever.

Romeo is a Dead Man releases for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 11.
