Blue Prince Developer on Localisation and Direct Sequel

It’s been an absolutely incredible year in video games for both AAA titles including Death Stranding 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Donkey Kong Bananza; as well as indies including Expedition 33 and Hollow Knight: Silksong. All games that have reviewed very highly here at Gamer Social Club.

Though one that really stood out is Dogubomb’s breakout indie title, Blue Prince which we adored in our review saying “Blue Prince’s design is masterful, its vision clear, and every moment spent within Mt. Holly Estate feels purposeful”.

With fans around the world eager to play the game in other languages, the game’s mastermind Tonda Ros has finally commented on the possibility of localisation in an interview with Polygon. A lot of the game’s puzzles rely on English language wordplay which are integral to the experience rendering localisation to other languages problematic.  Ros said: “there are certainly no concrete plans because it is largely considered near impossible,”. Like with all direct language translations, meaning, context and feel is lost between the words of another language.

The “near impossible” comment is in relation to the amount of time it would take to complete any localisation process, Ros added “It’s a tough decision to let Blue Prince be discoverable by more people, but potentially risk burning out myself and/or giving up making a whole nother game,”.

Ros is keen that Blue Prince stands on its own. A direct sequel isn’t something they’re interested in doing, opting for each project to be “unique”. There could be a game set in the same universe, but Blue Prince 2 isn’t a project Dogubomb is interested in.

If you’re just getting started with Blue Prince, it can be a daunting puzzler at first so be sure to check out our Beginner’s Guide. We also have a guide to unlocking the Bullseye achievement / trophy.
