Today’s the day. It’s officially Final Fantasy IX’s 25th Anniversary.
That’s right, the popular game, which was released back on the original PlayStation is now 25 years old. Releasing on 7 July 2000, Final Fantasy IX is well-loved by Final Fantasy fans, some even saying it’s the best one. I think our Guides Editor thinks that for sure.
To celebrate the 25th birthday of the game, Square Enix have released a special movie to commemorate the milestone.
The game has gone on to sell over 8.9 million physical and digital copies around the world. The game is currently available in a remastered version on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.
Square Enix describes the theme of returning to one’s roots being the driving force behind this game. Together, Zidane the thief, Princess Garnet, and Vivi the black mage, each with their hopes and dreams, embark on an epic adventure, drawn ever by the light of the crystal.
Final Fantasy IX 25th Anniversary
A lot has been happening to celebrate the game’s 25th anniversary. With a whole load of special merchandise releases, including:
- Final Fantasy IX Picture Book: Vivi, Grandpa, and the Day of Departure _ 44 pages, due out on July 2
- Final Fantasy IX 25th Anniversary Vinyl _ Timeless Tale _ due out on July 9
- Zoff x FF IX Collaboration Glasses _ due out in early July
- Final Fantasy IXÂ 25th Anniversary Lottery
- Music boxes – releasing on 31 October
- FINAL FANTASY IX Music Special Live Stream – taking place:
- July 6th 8:00pm to July 8th 5:00am (PDT)
- July 7th 4:00am to July 8th 1:00pm (BST)
There’s also a whole load of new merchandise that’s been announced too!
Lot’s of people are hoping that Final Fantasy IX will be getting a remake in some form. With us reaching the 25th anniversary, you would expect that announcement to be imminent if it is coming. We’ll have to wait and see what Square Enix have up their sleeves (or not as the case maybe).
