EA Sports gave a deep dive into some of the new gameplay elements in College Football 26. We got details about the new playbook expansion, new player type and abilities, revamped wear and tear system, physics base tackling, updates to stadium pulse, improved player movement and so much more!
Bigger books and more plays

College Football 26 has opened and expanded the playbooks and for the first time ever it will feature over 300 real college coaches. Each coach will bring their own unique style of play to their teams and playbooks. This means authentic play calling and distinguish school identities in the game. CFB 26 will have more motion plays, expanded RPO and QB runs and smarter option routes. From Miami’s modern Air Raid offense to Iowa States power spread, every team will feel unique.
Along with the new real-life coaches and play calling, we see the playbook grow. College Football 26 has over 2800 new plays and 45 plus new formations. The developers took the time to study a lot of film from last year’s college football season. Which will be shown on the field in new plays and formations. Unique formations featuring Rice’s Pistol Wingback, ECU’s Trips Off Over Wk, Penn State’s Shotgun Gate and a lot more.
You’re Out

One of the new features that a lot of players are looking forward to is “Dynamic Subs”. In College Football 26 you don’t have to go to the pause menu to make substitutions, you can make subs right in the middle of the action. To make subs during pre-play, simply press Up on the D-pad to instantly access who is on the field. Then cycle players in and out by tapping Left or Right on the D-pad.
Sub has also gotten smarter and more streamlined. We will be able to sub the entire offense or defense or just sub specific positions. So, if you notice some players beginning to show signs of wear and tear, you can easily sub them out. We will also be able to reset subs to what the base depth chart is.
Wear and Tear
Wear and tear was not meant to be just an early injury system, it was used to help balance the game. The developers first worked on resolving those complicated issues, then carefully adjusted every ability in the game. We do this to keep every ability balanced and to show how wear and tear affects them.
College Football 26’s dynasty mode will give the players complete customization of Wear and Tear experience. If you want more damage from hit sticks or sacks, faster healing between quarters, we will be able to do that. Every aspect is now in your hands:
- Normal Tackle Impact
- Catch Tackle Impact
- Hit Stick Impact
- Cut Stick Impact
- Defender Tackle Advantage Impact
- Sack Impact
- Block Impact
- Impact Block Impact
- Per-Play Recovery
- Per-Timeout Recovery
- Between Quarter Recovery
- Halftime Recovery
- In-Game Healing Reserve Pool
New Player, who me!

College football 26 gives us new player archetypes and abilities. Some existing abilities have been rebalanced, and some new ones have been introduced. We will get 10 brand new archetypes, each individually crafted. No two archetypes will be the same, as each is uniquely designed.
Whenever a player begins cooking, they receive a significant physical boost. If they already possess a Platinum-tier ability, it immediately upgrades to a brand-new Heisman tier-packed with improved effects and powerful new features, all crafted in response to player feedback. You’ll know the upgrade happened by a green flash around their icon. On the flip side, if their performance dips, a red downward arrow will indicate they’ve dropped a tier.

Two of the new abilities we will see are “Battering Ram” and “Hammer”. Both abilities are based on legendary college football players. Battering Ram is based on the contact seeking backs we all love. The “Hammer” ability is modeled after legendary linebackers like Ray Lewis. Can’t wait to see these new abilities and archetypes in action.
