Sony have today announced that the struggling PlayStation VR 2 (PS VR2) will be receiving a permanent price cut globally in March 2025. The new permanent price reduction is an attempt from Sony to increase the slow sales of its expensive virtual reality headset.
Taken from the PlayStation Blog post, Sony had the following to say: "For those of you who have been waiting for the opportunity to jump into PlayStation VR2 and experience what this generation's innovative virtual reality system has to offer, we are happy to share some great news. Starting in March, we're reducing the recommended retail price (RRP) of PS VR2."
The price reduction means PS VR 2 will be available in two packages with the same new pricing – $399.99 / €449.99 / £399.99 / Â¥66,980 recommended retail price (includes tax for EUR, GBP, and JPY):
- PlayStation VR 2 standard package: Includes PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controller, and stereo headphones
- PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle: Includes PlayStation Store voucher code for Horizon Call of the Mountain, PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controller, and stereo headphones
The incoming price represents a significant reduction in the current RRPs of $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99, representing price cuts of $150 / €150 / £130. However, PlayStation VR2 has been on sale multiple times, including pricing of an even lower price of £349.99 in the UK last year.
PS VR2 has struggled to make an impact in the niche and competitive virtual reality market. The expense of a PlayStation 5 console, plus the expense of the headset itself has priced many potential consumers out of a purchase. Alternatives including the standalone Oculus do not require additional hardware to run. Whilst PS VR2 can be used on PC and PlayStation, a further expense for a PC adaptor is required.
