Rare fans, rejoice! We finally have some news about Rare’s next title, Everwild, which was first announced back in late 2019. The Xbox first party studio teased the game last December with a company Christmas card featuring the game, but we now have firm confirmation that the game still exists thanks to the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer.
Appearing on an episode of the XboxEra podcast, Spencer was asked which games Xbox fans should be excited for, and Everwild made the cut! “I was recently out at Rare. It’s nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they’re making,” Spencer said, “It has been [a while]. And we’ve been able to give those teams time in what they’re doing which is good and still have a portfolio like we have.”

“It’s like a dream that Matt [Booty] and I have had for a long time”, continued Phil, “so it’s finally good to be there. We can give those teams time.” It does seem as though Xbox are getting closer to this dream scenario; constant releases throughout the year from 1st party studios, all releasing on Game Pass. Having numerous titles spread out gives studios time to work on their projects and not feel under pressure or require periods of crunch. Let’s hope this busy first half of 2025 is a sign of this plan coming to fruition.
Elsewhere in the podcast, Phil addressed Xbox games being published on other platforms, stating how he now wants to “allow more people to play” their games whatever the platform. He also agreed that the 70% they would make from game sales on other platforms would still help them “build great portfolios”.
2025 is a big year for Rare, and not just because of this news. The studio will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, having been founded by the Stamper brothers back in 1985. While this is no guarantee that we will hear anything else about their upcoming title, it would be a nice way to highlight the studio’s incredible achievement. We’ll just have to wait and see how they decide to celebrate!

In the meantime, Rare has been supporting one of Xbox’s most successful new IPs from the Xbox One generation, Sea of Thieves, with the game’s 15th Season of content arriving February 20th. Featuring big updates and additions to content, customisation, and accessibility, Sea of Thieves fans are in for a wild time! Rare has done an excellent job supporting the game, ever since it first released back in 2018, which is no doubt part of the reason why the game celebrated hitting the over 40 million player milestone back in April of 2024.
Over a million of those players came when the game launched on PlayStation 5 last year, and that has no doubt gone a long way to convincing the Xbox team to publish their titles on other platforms.
It is hard to say whether we will hear or see anything else of Everwild this year, but you can be sure that the GSC team will report on it as soon as we do!
