**UPDATE: Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap received an update today that moved the spot for one of the shards. You no longer need to jump to the pillar for Shard #3. Guide has been updated with the new location.
Max is a secret unlockable character in Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap and there’s an achievement tied to unlocking him as well – Daddy’s Home. To see if this game is for you, check out our Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap Review.
To unlock Max you must collect 5 glowing shards hidden around the Order Fortress. You’re going to want to use the war mage Kalos as he has a secondary ability called Slam Jump that will make getting 2 of the shards super easy.

Shard #1
The first shard can be found on a platform just above where you find Max in the Order Fortress. Take the wood stairs right behind Max up to a landing and you will find the first shard out in the open over Max’s head.
Shard #2
From the first shard head down the stairs behind Max and hang a right. On the right hand side there’s another set of stairs, these ones are brick, this time leading to the second floor of the fortress in the central area. Once up the stairs look left and you will see the shard clearly in the open.
Shard #3
From shard #2 you want to drop down into the central area and head over to the curved stairs. Take the stairs up on the left hand side to the second level and take your first left outside to the smithy area / trap shop. Head all the way to the East past the furnace to the area behind the shop. Look to your left and you will find the shard out in the open here.
Shard #4
From shard #3 we’re going to want to head all the way to the northern part of the fortress. Head back to the curved staircase in the central area and take that up to the third floor to the area where the Weavers are. In that room you will find the 4th shard in the middle northern most alcove.
Shard #5
The 5th and final shard will have you heading out to the training grounds outside the fortress at the very east end of the map. Head back to the room where Max is and head out the doors there to the outside area with training dummies and archery targets. Out in this area there are a bunch of columns that you will need to jump up to reach a ledge protruding from the fortress wall. Use Kalos again if you wish as the last few jumps can be tricky. Get to one of the higher columns and just use the slam jump ability to make it over to the ledge where the last shard will be waiting for you.
With the final shard collected you’ll unlock the secret character Max who is honestly pretty OP, so you should unlock him as soon as possible.
