Necro Story Review

Who knew taking souls and raising skeleton armies could be so funny because I definitely didn’t. I’m talking about “Necro Story”, the second game by Rablo Games. Necro Story is comedic, light-hearted RPG about a necromancer who has been given the task to save the world. The fight between not so evil and evil in this story is truly a one of kind experience, this is the review of Necro Story.

In Necro Story you are a necromancer named Jaimus (you can change the name) who is awoken after being sleep for 5 years. You quickly discover you are the only human left on earth and are given the task to save humanity. Your main companion, guide and pain in the butt on your journey is Vivi, a white mage who happens to be a ghost. You and Vivi travel through earth, heaven and hell to try to complete your quest. The banter between you and Vivi adds such a great comedic element to this game. From the jokes to the insults, to the witty response to other NPCs, I’m not sure who was funnier.

As I stated above you can customize the character from his name all the way down to his or her belt and robe. Even though there isn’t a massive selections of styles, it’s enough to make you happy.

As you journey through the game your power and abilities grow. During the character customization you get to choose which magic school you specialize in. The schools range from summoning, afflictions, darkness, life steal and dark pacts. Each one has a perk if you specialize in that school. Yes, of course you are able to bring things back to life, that’s part of the perks of being a necromancer. As you eliminate enemies you can take their souls and add them to your team to use in future battles. With this being an RPG, each beast has different class like tank, wizard, healer, warrior and others. There are over 50 different beast to capture and you can name them as well. Takes me back to my gotta catch them all days.

The game takes place in three different worlds or areas. You start on enviso(earth) as you and Vivi travel to destroy the seals to unlock the portal. Once unlocked you travel to the upperworlds(heaven), where you quickly find out things are not as they should be. Along with earth, heaven is also in disarray and we later find out why. After a quick stop in purgatory you make your last stop to the lowerworlds(hell).

Along with the story, I really enjoyed the gameplay. Even though some of the battles got a bit repetitive, it was still very enjoyable. I had such a good time trying to figure out which beast worked well with my team. Which class type matched my strategy the best and made it easy to knock out the opposition.

You start the game with just 2 spells available for use. As you progress, that changes quickly as you unlock new spells and skill points. As you level up you are able to invest in willpower, endurance, magic and strength. You skill points also allow you to upgrade your spells. Your spells are categorized by schools. Each school has 4 spell slots that can be upgraded and used as needed. Before battles you are able to choose which spells you want to use or change them depending on the enemy you are facing.

Necro Story also boasts a large number of items that can be found and given to you and your team members. You are rewarded for searching the area and finding the chest. There are 3 item types, which include staffs(your character), trinkets and gems . The trinkets and gems are only able to be added to our companion and teammates. The staffs can only be used be Jaimus. The items are designed to give the wearer a boost in certain stats. One my favorite staffs was “Norbert”, can’t wait for you all to meet him.

Another cool and fun aspect are getting the dark pacts. While you are searching those seals to unlock, you also have the opportunity to find demon towers. In those demon towers are where you will sign your dark pacts. There are 4 towers and each tower contains a different demon that you will have to make a deal with to use their power. This is completely optional, you do not have to sign a dark pact. I will say they do come in handy in fights against some of the more powerful foes.

Speaking of foes, and as I stated previously, there are over 50 beasts that you can capture. This means the enemy types will have variations, where they may look the same but have different colors and classes. One might be blue and a healer and the other might be red and a wizard. As I stated, some of the battles can feel a bit repetitive but there are enough bosses, mini bosses and enemies to keep you on your toes.

Overall Necro Story is a truly fun and funny game. The comedic timing alone makes this a game I’m going to be recommending. It took me just under 8 hours to roll credits and I’m already planning my next playthrough. Necro Story is a game that doesn’t take itself to serious, it won’t waste your time and will have you chuckling left and right. Filled with RPG elements, fun battles, team management and strategy are all rolled into this game.

Thank you Rablo Games for the code and this review was done on Xbox series X. Necro Story release on Steam, Xbox Series S/X, PS5 and Nintendo Switch on October 7th.
