PlayStation has been on fire lately. Arguably ever since they got their PlayStation 5 stock issues under control it's been win after win. Record breaking console sales, award winning games and now a massively popular live service game with Helldivers 2.
All of this is what makes yesterday's Helldivers 2 drama all the more glaring as it's a rare misstep for the company. So why did they do it, and will they reverse the decision? And if they don't will it hurt them or is this just more social media outrage that won't matter in a couple days?
At first glance you might even think it's not a misstep at all. Making PC gamers sign into a PlayStation account in order to access Helldivers 2 was always part of the plan. It was supposed to be implemented at launch but due to server issues they temporarily waved the need.

So in that sense, players should have known from the jump. Either everyone forgot or more likely, no one reads those messages until it actually effects them. On top of that it's pretty standard practice these days for companies to make you log into their own service, so it makes sense why PlayStation would implement this.
Regardless of that, it has turned into a bad look for the company even if it's not fully warranted. Fans are mad and review bombing the game. Perhaps even more worrying is developer Arrowhead Studios seem annoyed and upset by the decision.
PlayStation has long been chasing a successful live service game (who isn't these days) and even longer looking for a successful shooter. They have both with Helldivers 2. Is all of this really worth potentially souring a relationship with a developer over? I personally don't think so.
And let's get to what I think the biggest blunder here is from PlayStation. The reason for this they are saying is security. No one buys this. Just be honest with your reasoning which is obviously you want to increase your monthly active user numbers for investors. Nothing wrong with that, everyone does it, but treat your fans with respect and give them the real reason. They aren't stupid.

All of this has added up to the biggest success story of the year outside of maybe Palworld turning into a negative story which goes to show how easy it is for a corporation to make 1 move and piss everyone off.
This is the first big blunder by the new PlayStation regime without Jim Ryan. How they go about dealing with this will be telling. Do they ignore the outrage and hope it goes away or do they react? Either way it will be interesting to watch.
