I know what you are thinking after reading that headline. Helldivers 2 and Sea Of Thieves aren’t even remotely similar what are you talking about? And you are right, the actual games have nothing in common other than they are best played with friends. But stick with me here and you will see what I mean.
Earlier this week Rare announced Sea of Thieves had hit 40 million players, a truly remarkable number. PlayStation, for all it’s incredibly successful games has nothing that big in terms of player count (ok it has Astro Bot but respectfully that’s a cop out). Of course player count and sales are two entirely different things and I’m not suggesting Sea Of Thieves is on the level of the God Of War’s and Spider-Man’s of the world.
Not only that, but until Helldivers 2 came along PlayStation hadn’t really seen this much success in a multiplayer or live service game like Sea Of Thieves, nor had it seen such incredible success on PC like Sea Of Thieves. A big part of that is PlayStation’s insistence on making games fully PlayStation exclusive for the first 12-24 months but it’s true none the less.
Those are the first main connections. Big live service games doing incredibly well on console and PC, bringing a larger player base and having long sustaining legs as they continue to evolve. It’s obviously too early to say Helldivers 2 will have legs, but I’m confident predicting it will. Now here comes the final, most controversial piece of this. Could Helldivers 2 be the first PlayStation studios exclusive to come to Xbox?
Yes I know, MLB The Show is already on Xbox and that’s a PlayStation made game, but that was MLB forcing their hand. Helldivers 2 on Xbox just makes a ton of sense for all the reasons Sea Of Thieves on PlayStation makes a ton of sense. Live service games just make sense to be on as many platforms as possible. It’s why the now PlayStation owned Marathon is still coming to Xbox. It’s why Minecraft continues to be on PlayStation.
And the crazy thing is, even in the world of constant console wars, most PlayStation fans don’t seem to care if Helldivers 2 goes to Xbox. Hell most of them encourage it. They want their friends to join them regardless of the platform they use. With PlayStation executives hinting at a more multi platform approach it seems more possible than ever. Yes they are talking about PC there, but we once thought Xbox was just talking PC as well.
And before you start saying I’m just an Xbox guy that’s port begging, I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not. I’m an old man as far as gaming goes these days and I still believe in exclusivity being important. But I also see the value in some games going to all platforms. I said it when the speculation was going on about Sea Of Thieves and I’ll say the same about Helldivers 2. It just makes sense.
If you’ve made it this far, first off thanks! Secondly, do you see now how the dots are connected? Are you with me now? Can Helldivers 2 become PlayStation’s Sea of Thieves? Let me know in the comments below.
