Before merging with SquareSoft in the early 2000s, Enix was known in Japan as a publisher of a broad range of Japanese RPGs alongside its massive Dragon Quest series. One of the studios it partnered with was Quintet, which went on to release underrated classics like ActRaiser, Illusion of Gaia, and the Japanese and European only release Terranigma. After a lengthy search for its rights, Clear River Games has confirmed that the Terranigma remaster will arrive in January 2027.

Terranigma was originally released in Japan in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game follows a young boy named Ark who, after opening a forbidden door, embarks on a quest to save his world from ruin. The original featured artwork by manga artist Kamui Fujiwara and was directed by Ys writer Tomoyoshi Miyazaki. In 2021, fans campaigned for the game to receive a re-release but there was speculation as to whether Square Enix still owned the rights to Quintet’s games.

The speculation was put to rest earlier this year when Clear River Games announced a remaster in collaboration with Square Enix and artist Kamui Fujiwara. Today the publisher announced that the remaster is set to release on January 14, 2027, with multiple physical editions available to pre-order from Clear River Games and Limited Run Games’ websites. The physical and digital releases are both expected to be available from launch.

The remaster will include various quality of life upgrades and unique features including a ‘Quick Magic’ button, item hot-swapping, customizable background art, a music player, a museum, a rewind function, remappable controls, and an all-new ‘Arranged Mode’ which tweaks various elements including increased magic damage and a mini-map for easier navigation.

Terranigma will release for PC (via Steam and GoG), PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S on January 14, 2027.
