Blizzard was teasing something big for Diablo this weekend at BlizzCon, and it sure seems like they delivered. Today during the big Blizzard showcase Blizzard has indeed announced Diablo V.
Speculation had run wild within the Diablo community, with many hoping for long rumoured and hoped for Act 6 in Diablo 2. While we didn’t get that, we got the next best thing with a teaser for Diablo V. This was infact just a teaser as the details on the game are extremely scarce at the moment.
What we do know at the moment is the game is expected to release in 2029, which is quite a long ways away. Diablo V takes place a century after Diablo IV. Diablo has won and Sanctuary has fallen. There are no more heroes left to save the day. The brief trailer shows us a burning Sanctuary as Diablo’s minions carry off a fallen hero. It is dark, it is grim, it is Diablo.
Diablo V: Forging the Next Era Panel
After the showcase we got some more details during the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel with the developers. During this panel they revealed some key things for the game and its plot.
- The Lord of Terror Returns: Diablo has conquered Sanctuary and rules from the throne of Westmarch, using its people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. He is no longer a distant threat waiting at the story’s end; Diablo himself shapes the story, the world, and your path through it from the very beginning.
- Heir to a Lost Kingdom: Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom that Diablo has turned into an outpost of Hell. A mysterious connection to Diablo makes the Heir both a threat to him and uniquely vulnerable to his influence.
- Sanctuary, Annihilated: The Western Continent sits at the heart of Diablo’s reign of terror. The world itself is unstable: Diablo is reshaping it through terror, and the terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change each time players return.
- The Road Is Your Home: With towns and strongholds lost, survival depends on building a caravan of allies who travel together through the scorched wastes. These companions double as vendors and carry their own stories, among them a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.
- New Classes Revealed: The panel introduced the Demon Hunter, Monk, and all-new Plague Knight, the first of many classes planned on the road to launch.
- Itemization Returns to Classic Form: Inspired by Diablo II, gear will carry stat requirements, larger items will take up more inventory space, and returning features like runes, runewords, and gear sets aim to make loot feel readable, memorable, and worth the hunt.
- The Road Ahead: Diablo V is still early in development. Starting in 2027, the team plans regular updates on progress, design philosophy, and new features as they take shape.

If Diablo V does release in 2029 it will be the first mainline Diablo game to release since 2023. All things considered that’s a pretty good gap between games. Diablo IV: Lord Of Hatred, an expansion for the game released earlier this year to rave reviews.
In our own review we gave it a 9 saying “Lord of Hatred brings with it so much content and changes its going to keep me busy for a very long time. Exploring the mechanics of new classes while slaying hell itself will never get old. With endless loot and endgame loops, Lord of Hatred will be loved by any fan of Diablo.”
It’s unclear at this time if the development of Diablo V means there won’t be anymore major expansions for Diablo IV.
